An Artist-Designed 1796 Farmhouse in Old Chatham, New York

Maison Monna is a restored 1796 farmhouse on 70 acres in Old Chatham, in New York’s Hudson Valley, roughly halfway between the city of Hudson and the Berkshires. It sleeps six across three rooms, with a swimmable pond, three historic barns, and rolling grounds.

The house belongs to Dorian Grinspan, a New York film producer who founded the fashion magazine Out of Order while at Yale. He found the home on a Zillow browse during the pandemic, decided to run it as a platform for other artists, and invited friends to shape its rooms. The farmhouse had passed through a pair of Shaker furniture dealers and a Ralph Lauren creative director, so its Shaker and Greek Revival details were intact when he arrived, and his renovation stayed light, adding air conditioning, more windows, and updated kitchens and baths. It was written up in The New York Times’ T Magazine in 2026 as a home where Japanese handicraft meets British whimsy.

The New York studio Chowa reworked the attic into a spare, Japanese-meets-Shaker room, but that theme runs down to the fittings. Louie Isaaman-Jones made the sconces, Talia Nidam Warshawsky the table lamps. Elsewhere the mix is wabi-sabi country house, ceramics by Dohm and Troy Town set among antiques Grinspan collected across Europe and Japan, chosen object by object.

Outside, the 70 acres hold a swimmable pond, three historic timber-frame barns, and a custom outdoor dining table by Roman Spataro, with a fire pit for the evenings.

Maison Monna has three guest rooms in the main house and accommodates up to six guests in total.

Good to know

Once a year, the house hosts a month-long artist residency that ends in a show, so a resident artist may overlap with your stay in that window. Ask when booking. Pets are considered case by case. Parties and events need written approval, and smoking indoors carries a $800 cleaning fee.

Old Chatham sits in Columbia County, about halfway between the city of Hudson and the Berkshires. The area is known for art, antiques, and farming. Ten minutes away in Ghent, Art Omi shows contemporary sculpture across more than 100 acres of open fields, free and open daily. In nearby Kinderhook, the Jack Shainman Gallery’s The School fills a former schoolhouse with large-scale exhibitions on Saturdays. Chatham has the Crandell Theatre, the oldest single-screen cinema in the county, and PS21 for outdoor performance. Hudson, about 20 minutes on, is the region’s hub for antiquing along Warren Street and farm-to-table dining. Wineries, farm stands, swimming, and skiing fill out the seasons.
