A Flemish Barn Is Transformed Into A Modern Country Retreat
Stripped down to the bare essentials of borderless space, light, and crisp clean lines, this barn conversion is refreshingly unencumbered by superfluous design. With its rustic timber bones recalling its former life as a home for animals, the historic structure makes a chic transition into an airy, modern vacation home rental in Belgium.
Part of a large 30-acre homestead, the structure was in a dilapidated state when it was discovered by a local family, and has undergone a complete transformation, with some sleek modern additions and polished but simple design.

The spaces double as an art gallery of sorts with bold, large-scale pieces providing some intriguing contrasts. Read more about the art in our Journal here.
Surrounded by lush green meadows, woodlands, and orchards, this historic barn conversion is located in the tiny hamlet of Malderen, halfway between Antwerp and Brussels.
Built in the early 20th century, the charm of the historic structure has changed little from the outside, with its classic brick facade nestled into the walled gardens. Smartly integrating all of the original timber beams, the interiors have been thoroughly updated with a fresh, modern aesthetic.
Soaring two stories high, the spaces are awash in light, with a crisp white palette and polished concrete floors. Cheerful and welcoming, the ground floor includes a spacious fireside lounge and reading area with double doors that lead to the gardens. The sleek, open plan kitchen is state of the art, with an adjacent dining area that can seat four.
The second floor includes two double bedrooms and an open-plan office that can double as an extra bedroom.
A mix of country vintage and modern furnishings and decor along with an impressive gallery of large-scale paintings lend the spaces color and creativity.
There are acres of unspoiled landscapes with a natural swimming pond and woods where you can wander down the trails to explore.
BELGIUM'S GOLDEN TRIANGLE
The village of Malderen is set within picturesque countryside ideally situated within the golden triangle of Antwerp-Brussels-Ghent. A green oasis, this area of Flanders is surrounded by nature where you can hike or cycle through the great expanses of woodlands.
Brussels is thirty minutes south and remains the art and architecture capital, with the Grand Place at its ornate medieval core and a mix of eras coexisting side by side. Ixelles and Saint Gilles are vibrant, bohemian, and artistic with shops, markets, and restaurants, and an indie vibe while nearby Uccle, features a slightly elevated region of parks and nature among the townhouses and medieval squares and architectural gems.
The vibrant port city of Antwerp is just thirty minutes drive and dates to the Middle Ages with a rich medieval history that contrasts with a very lively modern beat. A center of fashion and entertainment as well as striking cultural and architectural contrasts, the city features and an avant garde appeal and a historic heart. The centuries-old central district with cobbled stone streets houses the famed Diamond district as well as the 17th-century Royal Academy of Fine Arts, the fortress along the River Scheldt and the magnificent and ornate cathedral in the market square.
The historic town of Ghent is an hour's drive, with its iconic medieval Gravensteen fortress and castle and plenty of excellent local restaurants, fun shops and beer pubs. It's an intimate but vibrant town with a combination of beautiful medieval history and ancient waterways and a bustling contemporary culture.
