The panoramic units are available individually (for two or four guests) or all together for a group of 16.
Bold Minimalism: Six Patio Studios in Crete’s Central Mountains
Nestled into the olive-blanketed highlands a short stroll from the village of Kissos, this boutique property’s six patio studios are defined by their cool, cave-like, concrete and stone minimalism designed by Berlin-based architect Sigurd Larsen. Each of the two- or four-guest apartments features exposed concrete and local stone that shelters guests from the Mediterranean sun. The structure, available as individual apartments, can also be booked in its entirety for a group of 16.
Meraki translates to “passion,” reflecting the love and care that’s gone into the creation of this sleek retreat. The apartments vary in size, and each studio faces the valley while enjoying the intimacy and atmosphere of refuge that comes from being built into the mountain. A seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living occurs via studio balconies, pergolas and generous shutters. The terraced garden is known locally as “Tsikalaria,” the former plot of an avid local farmer whose groves, woods and shrubs still stand, with an organic vegetable and herb garden in the works.

The property is tucked into a hillside in Crete’s central mountains with panoramic views of the valley and surrounding peaks. The structure was designed to mimic its rocky, sloping setting, a minimal natural outpost that offers luxury in its simplicity. Offering a break from tourism’s hustle and bustle, this is a rural escape, with hiking, swimming and lazing poolside the favored pasttimes.
Some of the island’s most beautiful beaches are located along the south coast nearby, sands such as Ligres and Triopetra, each about 25 minutes away. Hikers should trek in the Psiloritis National Park and recommended sightseeing to local villages includes Spili (8 minutes), with its famed fountain and essential services, a local farmers market, bakery, pharmacy and medical clinic. Or a bit further (30 minutes) to Rethymno, known for its vibrant dining and cultural scenes.
