A Monastic Pace on the Alentejo Hillsides
This estate is a refuge from the modern pace in the quiet of the Alentejo. Architect Pedro Ressano Garcia respectfully transformed the ruins into four distinct houses, honoring the original curves and single-floor horizontality of vernacular architecture. Whitewashed walls and iconic "listening chimneys" stand sentinel above an amphitheater of rice fields.
Interiors combine rustic Alentejo floor tiles with the sophisticated patina of salvaged 18th-century tiles used in the shower areas. Lime plaster ensures beauty and thermal insulation while an original schist façade is preserved within the living room of Casa de Cima. The spaces are curated with a small collection of paintings and tiles by Portuguese artists, including Eduardo Malta and Sofia Aguiar.
Surrounded by ancient olive trees, the two clusters of houses share a generous pool which reproduces one of artist Jorge Santos' works that's on display at Pátio da Romaneira. Each house has its own private courtyard or balcony, many featuring built-in sofas, outdoor tables, and Persian- and Mediterranean-inspired gardens for moments of peace and seclusion.
What we love
We are captivated by how the architect has woven local tradition into a modern masterpiece. The "listening chimneys" stand as silent sentinels over an estate designed for slow, intentional days. Textural antique tiles and soft lime walls create a backdrop of quiet luxury, while the central pool, a reproduction of a Jorge Santos piece, adds a layer of rare, curated beauty. It is the ultimate destination for resting and connecting with nature.

Good to know
The estate is a multi-generational family property operating as an active agricultural project, which includes rice paddies, olive groves, and wooded areas. The site is spread across different levels, and while the houses themselves are single-floor, guests should expect some stairs and uneven rustic Alentejo tiling across the courtyards and paths. A car is essential for exploring the wider Alentejo region and accessing the nearest town. Covered parking is available on the estate grounds.
