A High-Altitude Mountain Farm Available Seasonally
Flanking a steep slope at 1,300 meters in the dramatically sharp mountains of South Tyrol, this four-bedroom farmhouse with its outdoor sauna and open-air shower is warmed by traditional wood stoves, clad in 300-year-old wood and ancient timbers, and surrounded by dense coniferous forest and green meadows.
A Centuries-Old Alpine Chalet in South Tyrol with Sauna
A traditional mountain lodge in the dramatic South Tyrol, this timbered chalet is only minutes from a mountain village, yet feels worlds apart. With two double and two single bedrooms sharing a bath and separate WC, it’s ideal for a family or as a woodsy mountain getaway for outdoorsy friend groups.
A classic paneled parlor with a farmhouse stove occupies the lodge’s rustic heart, and the kitchen is equipped with a wood-burning stove. A barrel sauna and open-air shower stand in the garden with panoramic alpine views, and new, stylish decor—art by local artist Theresa Künig and designer furniture by sustainable local makers, Das Ganze Leben—accessorize the original craftsmanship that's on display.
The Mühlwalder Valley extends below, easily contemplated from the flowering garden with its large alfresco dining table, from the authentic wooden balcony, or from a yoga mat (with private lessons available).
Around
Located in the Tauferer Ahrntal, the farm is easily reached via a narrow, paved mountain road. The small town of Mùhlwald is only five minutes’ drive away, and the larger community of Sand in Taufers is about 15 minutes from the farm, offering numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants.
Today, the South Tyrol is famed for its wild, unspoiled outdoor recreation opportunities. Some 80+, 3,000m peaks encircle the valley, making mountaineering, hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing a focus for visitors, and ideal for experts and skilled outdoorsmen. The Mühlwalder Valley is peaceful and strikingly photogenic, home to two small towns, Mühlwald and Lappach, and a number of lakes, rushing rivers and meandering streams. The Tauferer Ahrntal mountain range can be summed up in three words: mountains, nature, and cheese. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of opportunities for hiking, climbing, and mountain biking in the Rieserferner-Ahrn and Zillertal Alps natural park areas, and the region’s farms usually double as cheese makers, producing the local Ahrntal gray cheese.
Nature is huge and dazzling here, with fragrant alpine meadows, dense evergreen forests, stark glacial landscapes and jagged peaks. Night skies are velvety black and unpolluted by light, ideal for stargazing and contemplating the universe.
