A Hidden Garden Refuge in San Miguel de Allende
na|na is a garden guesthouse in Zona Centro, the historic center of the UNESCO World Heritage site, San Miguel de Allende. It has four rooms for up to eight guests, available individually or as a whole house.
Hirracional and ImoxStudio designed the home. Their approach is rooted in gardens, silence and a meaningful pause from everyday life. The property sits in a section of Zona Centro with historic protections, which meant the part of the home facing the street needed to be restored. But the rest of the property is newly built and takes sustainability seriously. Greywater runs through a small constructed wetland before it reaches the gardens, the roofs are planted, and bees, hummingbirds and dragonflies are regular visitors.
The house is laid out as a series of zones, and moving between them is part of what makes the stay special. Náay and Zana are reached over volcanic stone bridges (Náay's crossing a pond), and Kuna sits at the top of a private staircase inspired by old monasteries. In between are three gardens, the Jardín del Oficio, the Jardín del Recreo and the Jardín Múbú, each with a stone fountain, and the pool. Take your morning coffee along the paths while the hummingbirds work the planted roofs, find a quiet corner by a fountain in the afternoon, and, if you’ve booked Múbú or the whole house, end the day in the ofuro.
Múbú is the largest room, at 130 m² (about 1,400 sq ft), and the one to book for a longer stay. Its bedroom and bathing room both open onto a private garden under the open sky, and it has its own gym with a Peloton, a meditation room and an ofuro.
Then there’s the town itself. Walk out the door and you’re in the thick of San Miguel, five minutes from La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the pink-stone neo-Gothic church that shapes the skyline, and the Jardín, the main square in front of it. The cobbled streets around it are full of galleries and cafés, but when you come back through the door at na|na, it’s quiet again.
Book a single room and share the pool and the three gardens with other guests. Book the house and all of it is yours, so eight people can spend the days together and still each have a room to retire to. The property includes an on-site office for the house manager, who is available during regular working hours to assist with guest needs and ensure a comfortable stay. Breakfast comes with every stay.
