A Brutalist Sanctuary in the Baja Desert
This home is a bold statement conceived by architect Raquel Font as a desert sanctuary. The design explores the dialogue between raw, board-formed concrete and the ephemeral desert light. Its powerful, sculptural presence is balanced by a deep sense of tranquility, creating a space that feels both monumental and intimately connected to the surrounding landscape of cacti and ocean.
The material palette is restrained, focusing on concrete, locally sourced wood, and glass to create a cohesive environment. Furnishings are largely bespoke and integrated into the architecture, from built-in sofas to cantilevered desks.
Exterior spaces include a shaded central terrace for dining and lounging, leading directly to a sleek lap pool. The grounds are intentionally left wild, dotted with native desert flora that blends the property into its surroundings and offers unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean.
What we love
Where to start? This architectural project looks like an art sculpture, with its combination of wavy lines and boxy sleep quarters, the view, the shape of the pool, the roof terrace, the concrete dining table. There are so many different corners in which to sit, lounge, take it all in. And yet it still has an inviting feel.
