Mid-century architect Marvin Witt built his career creating both residential and commercial projects across the Pacific Northwest during his decades-long residency. Serving on the planning commission and teaching architecture in Portland, his signature style was a reflection of his deep roots and love of the area, its history, and iconic natural beauty.
Originally designed as his private family retreat, this holiday home in Oregon was thoughtfully restored and updated by a Portland-based husband and wife team who became the home's only other owners since Witt's departure.
The Northwest Contemporary style’s use of natural wood, stone, and spatial relationship to the light, create a stylish and harmonic response to the picturesque coastal beauty. Co-creating the design and vision for Portland’s south waterfront and downtown, Witt’s architectural contributions and preservation efforts informed his personal connection to the area, and his former home’s respectful restoration keeps his vision alive.
Towering into the treetops with views of the ocean peeking through, this holiday home in Oregon is a meticulously restored example of the mid-century, northwest, contemporary style.
Soaring three stories high and nestled into the branches, it has the feel of a modern treehouse. Somewhat inverted in how the spaces are configured, the top floor houses the living and dining areas with a fully equipped kitchen and walls of glass that immerse you into the forest.
The ground floor master bedroom features its own sitting area and a private deck, while the second floor includes two double bedrooms, one with treetop views of the forest and the ocean in the distance, and the second with its own private balcony.
Sleek but down to earth, this is the Pacific Northwest at its stylish best.
OREGON'S NORTHERN COAST AND CASCADES
The quiet Neahkahnie Beach neighborhood in Nehalem along Oregon's northern coast is just a short walk along the shoreline into the picturesque little town next to the bay.
One of a trio of charming and historic villages nestled around the Nehalem River and Bay, nearby Manzanita, Wheeler, and Nehalem are within the state's northernmost Tillamook County and are part of some of its most photographed scenery in Oregon.
Stretching for hundreds of miles along the Pacific and the Cascade headlands, Tillamook county's pristine beaches, and protected wetlands are home to an extensive network of Nature Conservancy and state parklands, dotted with scenic rainforests including the Siuslaw National Forest and the Cascade network with a multitude of bird, marine and protected wildlife.
Small and quaint, the towns are quiet in the offseason and swell with tourists in summer. Located ninety miles west of Portland, it’s some of the loveliest and best-protected coastlines in the state.
