With all the right grown-up, summer camp vibes, this bright, fun, Texas country getaway designed by the owner, a principal of Muhly furniture design studio, in collaboration with Austin-based Logan Architecture, manages to be cool, contemporary and cabin-ish all at once.

Campy and Cool Texas Country Retreat

Knotty pine cladding gives this house its rustic, retreat-in-woods appeal, softened by wispy natural grasses and brightened by oversized picture windows. In classic Texas ranch house styling, the country home is cut through with a traditional breezeway, with its two bedrooms and baths occupying one wing of the home. A big backyard swimming pool shines in the sun, only steps from deeply shaded wrap-around porches. And sliding glass doors outline the pool area, leading into the crisp, open-plan living and dining area, where the owner’s design-eye creates a serene, laid-back lounge atmosphere and a fireplace punctuates the light-filled room.

Cloaked by twisting live and post oaks and gnarled Texas cedars (junipers), the home was created for outdoor living, located on 13 private acres with the nearest community about 4.5 miles away. A greenhouse-styled, contemplative small den or mudroom occupies the front-of-the-house space where the screened-in front porch might be, and there’s plenty of space to spread out and relax—hike the woods, read, wildlife watch, swim and dine alfresco under the dark, wide-open Texas skies.

The five-foot-deep swimming pool benefits from a one-foot-deep “beach” end, perfect for water lounging, and there’s a propane grill and YETI cooler for poolside entertaining, along with an outdoor dining table set in the shade of the big, wrap-around back porch.

Located outside of the town of Paige, Texas, on a densely wooded acreage of oak and juniper trees, the home is an easy getaway from Austin (50 miles to the west) or Houston (125 miles to the east).

Originally a railroad town, Paige is a small community in Bastrop County, a hilly, green region east of Austin that’s long been known for its easygoing, outdoor recreation options. There’s lake and river fishing options, trails in the piney woods for hiking, biking and horseback riding, and paddling aplenty (kayak, canoe, SUP, tubes) along the Colorado River. The nearby Bastrop-Buescher State Park is a hikers-only trail system, offering over seven miles of marked paths known for their abundant wildlife. Birders come to the area to view nearly 300 resident species, and the Texas Forest Service maintains a unique nearby landscape known as the Lost Pines of Central Texas, a swath of loblolly pine trees occupying the westernmost edge of the species’ natural range. The trees can live up to 400 years.

This is Texas, so burgers, barbecue and breweries are abundant, particularly in the larger nearby community of Bastrop, the county seat. Paige itself is home to another type of Texas entertainment, the Cotton Bowl Speedway, a dirt race track that hosts monster truck and stock car races.
