A 19th-Century Warehouse Brought Back to Life

This centrally located loft is perfect for getting to know Paris. It's also located in a fantastic, converted 19th-century railway warehouse that blends traditional and modern aesthetics with flair.

This spacious apartment is located in central Paris, adjacent to the Gare de l'Est. The building it occupies is a former warehouse dating back to 1850, which sheltered the archives of the SNCF (French National Railway Company). Today, it has been refurbished and converted into apartments. This loft is located on the upper floors and retains much of its original charm, with features like the staircase and the bookcase preserved.

The property is accessed by a private glass elevator which soars alongside one of the biggest vertical gardens in the world. In spite of its central location, the apartment is peaceful in the daytime and at night. An immense teak footbridge, shared by the lofts, serves as a terrace, and is furnished with armchairs, chairs and tables - perfect for dining or just taking in the sun.

The loft is 7m high and split into two levels: second floor and mezzanine. The lower level holds a lounge, open kitchen, bathroom (under the staircase) and separate WC. The bathroom faces the plant wall, which guests can watch from the oversized bathtub. The mezzanine has a bedroom, office, and two dressing rooms.

Read an interview with host Bernard Crouzet here and take a walking tour of Paris with him here.

Around

The apartment is located close to the Saint-Martin canal, a popular destination for Parisians and tourists because of its picturesque restaurants and bars. The Gar de l'Est, one of the oldest and largest railway stations in Paris, is just across the road.

The closest museums, the Beaubourg (George Pompidou Museum) and Picasso Museum, are both within easy reach by foot. And the Louvre Museum is only 3km away, an estimated 35 minutes on foot. From there, the Seine and Notre Dame are only a few minutes' walk.

    The Guestbook

See what our community is saying about Parisian Loft.

We spent an incredible five weeks in Émile and Bernard’s magnificent Parisian loft. We had visited Paris many, many times before, but never for so long. We are New Yorkers now living in California, and for our 20th wedding anniversary we wanted to live a Parisian life in the trendy 10th arrondissement. This loft and its location made that possible in every conceivable way. Bernard + Emile are wonderful hosts. We discovered that immediately. They personally greeted us after our long journey. They helped us with our way too much luggage. There were berries and wine in the fridge and coffee for the next morning. They also provided a personal guidebook to acquaint us with the surrounding neighborhood. Make sure to follow their recommendations, particularly their restaurant suggestions. They know their food. As for the loft itself, the photos you see on this web site are spot on. The windows. Wow! You will never see anything like them again. The ceiling. Wow again. Tallest I’ve seen, even in NYC. The vertical garden. Beyond unique. The wall photos, the art, the furniture… all perfectly suited to the loft’s architecture, which is Industrial classic from another era. Plus, it was the quietest place we ever stayed in Paris. That and the bed made for great sleeping. In the hustle and bustle of the 10th, the apartment is a place of tranquility. A bit about the location. It’s central to life in the 10th. Less then a 10-minute walk to the Saint Martin Canal, one of the most lovely areas of the 10th and a destination for most Parisians. Don’t miss the local indoor market… only a five-minute walk. And you are a stone’s throw from the metro, so you can go anywhere in Paris with ease. One final thought. Émile and Bernard are sharing their actual home. That’s very rare in today’s world. Because of that, you have many home touches at your disposal, particularly a well-stocked kitchen and an amazing CD and book collection (French and English). So our advice: When you want a break from the amazing Paris Café Culture, stay put at home. Prepare an easy meal. Grab some wine and cheese. And play a little Chet Baker on the stereo. That’s a great way to chill in Paris. Denise and Lewis
