Portugal's Northern Regions and Quintas
Just outside of Porto in the leafy rural suburbs along the Douro, this vacation home rental in Portugal is a lighthearted and cheerful space that celebrates Portuguese country style and the historic region's rural past.
Nature dominates the landscape, creating an atmosphere of tranquility, where the 18th-century manor house is surrounded by centuries-old heritage gardens, fruit groves, and forests.
A typical quinta found throughout the country, the house is part of a larger estate of two properties that includes a chapel and has been lightly updated with a fresh breezy charm. Awash in white with cool cerulean blues, colorful textiles, and traditional art and decor, it's a lovely and nostalgic representation of the vernacular style.
The main floor includes the living room with a kitchenette and dining space and one of two bedrooms, all with views of the river. A winding spiral stair leads up to the second bedroom with a balcony and full bath.
Wander out to the terrace for a sunny breakfast overlooking the river, chill out in the pool, or grab one of the kayaks to explore the river right from the house.
This heritage property is perfect for guests that want to experience the slower pace of the country and as a base for quick and easy access to the best of the port city and the Atlantic coast.
PORTO'S BURBS ON THE DOURO
The historic village of Avintes lies along the western banks of the Douro on the eastern borders of the city of Gaia and is one of the oldest in the area dating back to the 1st century. Home to beautiful natural parklands, with several river beaches along its shores, it has a small civic center with a handful of shops and cafes, while the center of Gaia and Porto are just a fifteen-minute drive.
The second-largest city in Portugal, Porto's beautiful historical center, the Ribeira district with its cobbled streets, old storefronts, and plazas, is still largely preserved and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. According to Lonely Planet, "humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval centre, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals."
But there's more to the city than its past. Buildings like Álvaro Siza Vieira’s minimalist Museu de Arte Contemporânea and Rem Koolhaas’ Casa da Música bring the city into the 21st century, full of public art and spirited nightlife. Yet it's only minutes from the beach town of Foz do Douro, the coastal path and sandy beaches.
Rich in Medieval history, the city is also famous for Santa Catarina street for shopping, traditional Fado music and the acclaimed Cafe Majestic along with Batalha Square where most of the city’s important cultural events and shows take place.
And while in the city that created Port wine, enjoy the many cellar tours offered.
