Silver Lake Classic
Located on a verdant hillside in LA's Silver Lake neighborhood, this 1940s-era bungalow retains its original vintage flair, leveled up by minimalist modern updates that let its good bones shine. Light filled, with views inside and out, the house is accessed by one of the neighborhood's famous "stair streets," and comes with the option to rent the owner's manual Fiat 500.
1940s-Era Original Gets Designer Update
The home of designer Gabriel Yuri Bollag of New Operations Workshop, a multi-disciplinary studio at the intersection of interior design, architecture, graphic and set design, this eye-catching, 1940s-era bungalow pops anew with touches of color, strategically placed art, and sleek, shiny design pieces.
The bright bungalow is built into the steeps of Silver Lake, and the elevated home benefits from a shaded front deck that runs the length of its façade, looking out across the woodsy, waterfront neighborhood. Behind its candy-apple red door, a whitewashed interior lets the home’s clean-lined original features stand out, accented by the creative flourishes brought to the classic blank canvas by designer Gabriel Yuri Bollag. Original details like casement and wide picture windows and bathroom glass brick and tiling are modernized by period-styled interior designs that echo the era’s penchant for the low slung, glamorous, and geometric.
Around
The LA neighborhood of Silver Lake's namesake reservoir is rimmed by a 2+-mile trail loved by runners, walkers and neighborhood amblers alike. The area is also famed for its “secret stairs,” and some of the hidden walkways can be found near the house. Famous painted versions of the steep staircases include the Micheltorena bank and the Swan Stairs, both vibrantly photogenic. Often called the “Brooklyn” of LA and consistently voted one of the city’s “coolest” places to live, Silver Lake has its fair share of hip dining, drinking, and coffee sipping spots, many of them clustered in and around Sunset and Silver Lake Boulevards, and there’s an abundance of small, independently owned boutiques to shop.
Getting outside is easy in greater LA, and nearby Elysium Park’s trails lead to stunning views overlooking downtown. Beach days are good days in LA, and getting to the waterfront in Venice or Malibu is recommended. The Arts District's galleries are more intimate and manageable than LA’s wealth of art museums, but you can’t go wrong with a day at the Getty or The Broad.
