A Homage to Ancient Rural Life

Prepare to be transported far back in time in a traditional medieval village that recreates the lifestyle of the Middle Ages in meticulous and authentic detail (with skillfully disguised modern amenities). Beautifully preserved with handcrafted details and respect for tradition and ancient culture, this is a project for the ages.

Occupying its own hilltop in Abruzzo, with breathtaking views overlooking the valley and mountains in the distance, this fortified medieval village inside the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga national parks is a giant leap back in time. A classic example of an Italian medieval hill town, the remote location was abandoned long ago, suspending it in time.

Part of an extensive revitalization of architectural heritage, the restoration was designed to conserve and revive the entire village of Santo Stefano as an “albergo diffuso” and preserve the integrity and authenticity of each building and the surrounding landscape in original period detail. Working alongside local organizations, the town mayor and the national park service, the project prohibited any new construction, bringing the village back to life without sacrificing its identity.

Surrounded by fortified walls, the enclave is comprised of numerous houses, outbuildings and squares and an assortment of modified spaces that retain their rustic character with cleverly hidden modern conveniences. Utilizing original materials, furnishings and textiles from the region, the traces of a bygone countryside life remain in every corner. The interiors are inspired by photographs by early 20th-century photographer and linguist Paul Scheuermeier, with thick stone walls, rustic wood and a few cave like dwellings. A mix of 29 rooms offer a choice of simple and elegant en-suite options for two to four guests each.

Offering both seasonal and year round-events, you can partake in traditional cooking, textile arts, soap making and creative workshops as well as enjoy musical artists in residence. The emphasis on regional gastronomy means your meals in the cellar dining room were plucked directly from neighboring lands and producers. A tea room is adjacent to the bottega, and sells locally-sourced crafts, oils, and handwoven textiles.

Working with the Museum of the People of Abruzzo and many of the older residents from the area, every facet of this unique village pays respect to the artisan skills that go back centuries and the spirit of ancient rural life.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Concierge and room services. Wifi throughout. Housekeeping services, artisan bath products. Optional limousine/car rental services, spa and massage services and child care facilities on request. AROUND

Remote, rugged and tranquil, this area of Abruzzo is all about scenic beauty. The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga national parks offer vast stretches of mountains and alpine plateaus to explore with gorgeous drives through the nearby valleys in and around the medieval city of Aquila. Badly damaged in an earthquake, the city's residents and many beautiful historic buildings are still recovering.

Nearby Campo Imperatore offers amazing views of the valleys and surrounding Apennine mountains with great hiking and seasonal skiing while the Adriatic beaches are an hour drive east.

LOCATION
