A Japandi-Inspired Retreat in Northern Vermont
A two-bedroom lake house blending Scandinavian minimalism with Japanese aesthetics and local Vermont cabin-in-the-woods vernacular, this waterfront retreat offers expansive lake views from every room. Interiors are curated with Seventies and Eighties design pieces, as well as plenty of cozy cabin vibes that put nature in the lead.
A Minimalist Lake House in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom
With its Scandinavian design influences and minimalist Japanese aesthetics, this lakefront house in the woods of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom overlooks Shadow Lake from its windowed façade and generous wraparound deck.
Tucked into the trees, the 1,760-square-foot space sleeps four in two bedrooms with king-sized beds and offers two full bathrooms with walk-in showers and a powder room. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there’s an open-plan living/dining area, with interiors inspired by 1970s Japanese listing bars and Scandi minimalism, with a retro Seventies and Eighties style. The monochromatic, simple design lets the landscape’s colors and textures take the lead and offers immersion in Vermont’s natural beauty. A fireplace anchors the living area, and in-floor heating keeps life extra cozy in the colder months.

Around
Shadow Lake in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is a geographic mecca of mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, rolling hills and farmland. The region moves at its own distinctive pace, attuned to the rhythms of slow living, farm-to-table eating, local seasonal food and drink production, and year-round outdoor recreation.
In winter, deep snow draws snowshoers to trails and forests, and skiers and boarders to Jay Peak and Burke Mountain. Summer finds hikers and bikers exploring the kingdom trails that wind through forests and farmland, with some of the country’s top mountain biking. Waters in the region offer canoeing, kayaking, swimming and fishing, and there’s ample opportunity for a round or two of golf or tennis.
A small-batch food scene focuses on farm-produced cheeses, organic seasonal produce and artisan-crafted local beers. The big US cities of Boston and NYC are 3.5 and 6.5 hours respectively by car, with Montreal, Canada, and Burlington, Vermont, the closest urban areas.
