A Quintessential Mid-Century Modern in LA’s Silver Lake Neighborhood
Conceived by award-winning architects Fung & Blatt and recently redesigned by LOAF, this Los Angeles residence sits overlooking the treetops of the Silver Lake neighborhood, a short drive from Hollywood and DTLA. The house, featured in Dwell magazine, combines mid-century modern aesthetics with contemporary California styling, plus a backyard made for easy, natural entertaining.
A Light-Filled, Mid-Century Modern in LA’s Hip Silver Lake Neighborhood
Beautifully designed, with classic mid-century modern lines and an award-winning refurbishment that landed it in the pages of Dwell, this architectural residence sits a stone’s throw from downtown LA and Hollywood, in sought-after Silver Lake.
The timeless, light-filled space offers walls of windows framing the palm-fringed skyline of the City of Angels, and clean-lined design that has seen the sensitive restoration of its mid-century geometry. There’s an abundance of rich modernist wood across its four bedrooms and bathrooms, and plenty of bright spaces furnished in an easy-going, California style.
Designed for outdoor living and playing, the house’s backyard has a jade-toned pool in the long shadow of a giant palm tree, a jacuzzi, a fire pit, and a lounge area complemented by an outdoor shower.
Around
Located in a prime spot in the always-buzzing City of Angels, Silver Lake offers the best of both worlds—easy access to Hollywood and downtown by car, and a vibrant, outdoorsy scene of sidewalk cafes, independent shops and a bustling farmer’s market all walkable from the house.
An LA neighborhood defined by its namesake reservoir, Silver Lake is rimmed by a two-mile trail loved by runners and walkers and neighborhood amblers. The area is also famed for its “secret stairs,” and some of the hidden walkways are reachable from the house on foot. Famously painted versions of the steep staircases include the Micheltorena bank and the Swan Stairs, both vibrantly photogenic. Silver Lake has been described as called the “Brooklyn of LA” for its vibrant local scene, and the area is consistently voted one of the city’s “coolest” places to reside, with plenty of hip dining, drinking and coffee sipping spots, many of them clustered in and around Sunset Boulevard or their tables taking up sidewalk space on Silver Lake Boulevard.
Getting outside is easy in this part of Los Angeles. Nearby Elysium Park’s trails lead up to stunning views overlooking downtown, and Griffith Park, with its famous Griffith Observatory, is within easy reach. For galleries and museums, visit DTLA for MOCA, MOCA Geffen and The Broad, or explore Arts District galleries like Hauser & Wirth.
