Seven Stone Villas on Milos Bay

Designed by Athens-based architects Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas, Skinopi Lodge sits on a private nine-acre seafront estate above the Bay of Milos. The seven single-story villas, built from local volcanic stone with polished cement floors and retractable glass walls, were conceived by owner Nausika Georgiadou, a former economist who spent years searching for precisely this stretch of sea-facing land. Full concierge service, daily housekeeping, and a private Aegean sea deck complete the picture. No pool necessary—the Aegean is three flights of stone steps below.

The architecture of the lodge draws its formal vocabulary from the syrmata, the fishermen's storehouses of the village of Skinopi, where boats were kept at ground level and living quarters occupied the floor above. Kokkinou–Kourkoulas translated this vernacular into a bioclimatic logic (cross-ventilation, heat-resistant volcanic stone, split-level doors for sea breezes) that means air conditioning is rarely needed. Landscape architect Helli Pagkalou shaped the grounds around indigenous Mediterranean planting that requires minimal water.

Inside, the design principle is restraint: bare whitewashed walls, polished cement floors, and as little furniture as possible. The intention, as Georgiadou says, is to refuse to compete with what lies outside. Large retractable glass doors pull the outside in, and outdoor kitchens and showers extend the inside out. Korres bath products, Bose sound systems, and Nespresso machines are the exceptions to the minimalism.

Each villa occupies its own territory within the nine acres, oriented for absolute privacy and calibrated to the western sunset. Stone steps descend from the property to a private sea deck directly above the Aegean, where the estate's boat, Summerwine, is moored. The land itself is a working Mediterranean garden: thyme, lavender, sage, and olive trees that produce the estate's own extra-virgin olive oil, presented to guests in each villa.

What we love

We have spent more summers than we can count island-hopping through the Cyclades, and Milos still stops us. The volcanic coastline, the light, the sense that the sea here has a different quality to it. What Nausika and her architects understood is that the best thing a building can do on this island is get out of the way: local stone, open doors, the Aegean doing the rest. Skinopi is the kind of place that earns genuine regulars, and once you've watched the sunset from that deck, you'll understand exactly why.

Layout

This vacation home for rent on Milos, Greece is available as individual villas sleeping between two and four guests, or as an exclusive-use property sleeping up to 20 guests across all seven villas.

The seven individual villas range from 30 to 85 square meters of interior space.

Three Herb Villas (Kapari, Anemone, Thymari) each accommodate two guests in a king bed.

Villa Almyra and Villa Elies sleep up to three in a king bed plus a sofa bed.

Villa Levanda sleeps up to three adults or two adults and two children — king bed and a sofa that opens to a double — with a separate living area.

Villa Skinos, the largest at 85 square meters, can accommodate up to four adults or two adults and three children. The bedroom has one king bed, and there are three single sofa beds in the separate living area with a second bathroom.

Experiences

Private half- and full-day boat trips to the sea caves of Kleftiko and Sykia, and to the uninhabited island of Polyegos, are available on board the estate's own vessel (from €1,250, subject to conditions). In-villa massage (60 or 90 minutes), yoga, and personal training are available on request, bookable 48 hours in advance.

Good to know

Skinopi Lodge is open from May to October, with a minimum stay of three nights. Daily housekeeping is included. Breakfast baskets (€70 for two) are available by pre-order the evening before. A 4x4 or SUV vehicle is essential as the road to Skinopi is an unpacked dirt track, and Milos' beaches are largely accessible only by jeep or boat. Airport and port transfers are available at €60.

Around

Skinopi Lodge is situated on the Cycladic island of Milos. While it feels remote, it's actually centrally located, with the port of Adamas, the capital Plaka and the traditional villages of Trypiti and Klima, all within a two-kilometer radius, a maximum of 10 minutes by car.

Milos is a volcanic island with more geological drama per square kilometer than almost anywhere in the Aegean. The lunar white-rock landscape of Sarakiniko—five kilometers from Plaka—is the island's most photographed natural formation. Plaka, the hilltop capital, contains the Archaeological Museum (home to a replica of the Venus de Milo, the original of which has been in the Louvre since 1821) and the 13th-century Venetian Kastro, whose position above the bay makes it one of the better sunset viewpoints on the island, if you don't mind stairs. The early-Christian catacombs at nearby Trypiti are among the most significant in the eastern Mediterranean. For dinner, the seafood restaurants of Mandrakia sit close enough to the water that the menu changes with whatever came in that morning. A car is essential for independent exploration.
