An Art-Filled Architect's Apartment in Central Milan
A 1920s-era classic in a traditional Milanese courtyard building, walking distance from the Central Station and Corso Buenos Aires, this residence curated by its owner architect Andrea Villa showcases architectural originals. Ceilings, floors, doors and finishes are paired with select vintage furnishings, all gracefully intertwined with modern Italian design pieces and contemporary paintings, ceramics and glass.
Blending hospitality with art gallery inspiration, the apartment gets its distinctive “AP-Art-ment” name because each of its design pieces, accessories and artwork is available for purchase.
An Art-Infused Architect’s Apartment at the Heart of Milan
A sweep through this gallery-quality, one-bedroom nest in a 1920s-era courtyard building in central Milan reveals an easy elegance. The residence’s classic architecture is what first greets the eye, a space of original ceilings, floors and doors brought firmly into the modern design era by sleek Italian designer pieces and bold contemporary art.
The owner is an architect, and the property’s furnishings reveal an affinity for design and color across the ages. Italian vintage furnishings like the Maralunga sofa by Vico Magistretti for Cassina (1973), stainless steel chairs by Willy Rizzo (1970), and a wall wardrobe by Osvado Borsani (1960) are illuminated by standout vintage sconces dating from the mid-century through the 1980s. Those are accessorized by contemporary modern paintings and even furnishings crafted by the owner, like the suspended “ray” armoire from 2019 or the swivel chrome mirror and hidden medicine cabinet in the art-deco-inspired, green marble bathroom.
Blending hospitality with art gallery inspiration, the apartment gets its distinctive “AP-Art-ment” name because each of its design pieces, accessories and artwork is available for purchase.
Around
Located just outside the heart of Milan’s center, three minutes’ walking distance from the Central Station and Corso Buenos Aires and about 10 minutes from Montenapoleone, the apartment is set in a quiet residential area relatively close to the Duomo and Palestro City Park, in a pleasant, lower key neighborhood. Interesting restaurants and bars are minutes from the door, and there are multiple markets, shops and museums (the Casa Museo Boshi Di Stefano, the Museo delle Illusioni and the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi) close by. Parks are nearby, and the streets here are good for getting around via bike. The owners recommend a morning stroll through the park and residential neighborhood to reach the Piazza San Babila in about 15 minutes.
