King Louis XV's Royal Factory
Built in 1739 by King Louis XV, this lovely Baroque building formerly housed a mill for the manufacture of royal linen. Located in the charming 12th-century village of Montolieu along a tiny medieval street, the venerable facade looks much as it has for centuries but the interiors have undergone a distinctively artistic and modern renovation.
Restored in 2003, the structure retains much of the historic splendor of the Baroque period with a sweeping stone staircase, several marble and chestnut fireplaces, an impressive vaulted cellar, and stone slab floors throughout.
Transformed into a comfortable and cheerful holiday house, the factory now offers a variety of en suite accommodations. From single guest rooms to complete self-catering apartments, each has been given a modern update, while keeping the original historic features intact. Furnished with an eclectic selection of vintage modern pieces and colorful decor and finishes, the house has been given new life and lighthearted character.
The guest house serves local dishes and desserts three nights a week and there's a hip little boutique in the entrance hall, a shared cinema room with a library and a lounge.
Over two acres of magnificent gardens are located at the back and sit along the banks of the Dure river, with lovely terraces on either side where you can lounge in the hammocks in the shade of the olive trees and fire up the BBQ for alfresco dining. A virtual paradise for kids where imagination, creativity and freedom are encouraged, the expansive property has a leafy playground with a trampoline, swings, playhouse, and a picnic table as well as a large swimming pool for summer fun.
THE VILLAGE OF BOOKS IN SOUTHERN FRANCE
Also referred to as the "Village of Books" the charming medieval town of Montolieu is dedicated to the art and craft of books. You'll find many bookstores, markets, stalls, and workshops devoted to the arts of papermaking, calligraphy and illustration, engraving and printing.
Just a short drive from the village, the lesser-known vineyards of Cabardes stretch out to the southwest and have been producing some of the finest Atlantic and Mediterranean varietals. The historic medieval fortified town of Carcassonne dating back to pre-Roman times is a UNESCO treasure and is just under a half-hour away. Toulouse is just over an hour away.
