Marcio Kogan Brings Brazilian Modernism to Barbados' Platinum Coast

Designed by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, this lavish holiday home in Barbados sits on a ridge just a short stroll from the island's platinum coast with magnificent views of the Caribbean sea. Fans of Brazilian Modernism, the owners worked closely with Kogan in the conceptual aspects of the house, crafting the dramatic design to flow from the topography of the land and creating expansive interior spaces that echo a livable art gallery. 

The voluminous dimensions are intended to integrate the interior and exterior spaces, opening up the structure to the outside world, and providing an emotional connection to the spectacular setting. A neutral palette of limestone, white walls and vast expanses of glass provides unity to the spaces and showcases the owner's striking collection of contemporary art and furnishings.

The lush grounds sit above a protected ravine below, filled with ancient Mahogany and Flamboyant trees and frolicking green monkeys.

Less than a mile from the island's platinum beaches, this holiday home in Barbados designed by architect Marcio Kogan is a stunning Caribbean retreat. Designed to follow the lines of the ridge boundary, the layout is arranged to maximize the views, with a dramatic double-height living space and walls of glass on both levels. 

The kitchen blends seamlessly out from the living room, with an open-air dining area facing the pool and an outdoor lounge to the side. The social spaces are separated from the sleeping areas, with three guest bedrooms all located on the ground floor, and the master suite with a glazed balcony and covered outdoor terrace located upstairs. 

The entire structure is organized around the pool and terrace overlooking a protected forest, all facing the magnificent views.

The British commonwealth nation of Barbados has a uniquely English spin on Caribbean culture. The island's bustling capital of Bridgetown is a UNESCO designated colonial site and port bustling with life in a fusion of cultural and  architectural contrasts. Catch the Cheapside Market on Saturday mornings for the island's best vendors, produce and crafts.

Known for its powdery pink and white sand beaches, the island's south side is home to the calm turquoise waters of Dover Beach. Just outside of Bridgetown is Carlisle Bay, where you can explore several shipwrecks and abundant marine life. Thunder Bay, often referred to as Reeds Bay, is a beautiful, quiet bay that runs from St Albans' Church towards Gibbes on the west coast and is within walking distance of the villa. Bathsheba Beach on the east coast is the surfing mecca. 

The lush interiors are not to be missed, along with Harrison's Cave, the mile-long cave system a few miles inland.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: The mild year round temperatures on the island mean it's always summer but July through November is the best time to visit with only intermittent showers. It does fall during the hurricane season, but there's a low risk of storms during the summer months.
