Two Weeks and a Trullo

This classic trullo home occupies a hectare of old olive trees in the countryside outside Ostuni, Puglia’s famed White City. With a generous swimming pool, a cane-topped covered patio outside a modern annex, a trio of traditional conical roofs, and its own private label extra virgin olive oil, the complex is spacious, yet intimate, fit for a crowd of 10 eager to blend local tradition with modern amenities.

Purchased by a young family at the end of a magical two-week vacation in Salento, this trullo is named EVO for the extra virgin olive oil that's produced from the property’s hundred-year-old trees. The traditional, dry-stacked stone structures make great, stylish use of the trullo’s typical vaulted volumes, redesigned as exposed stone passageways, creative decorative niches, and arching architecture statements like wee bathroom vanities and cool, organically shaped closets. Interiors are an artful blend of old world antiques and repurposed, mod décor pieces, and the styling feels fresh, contemporary and European classic all at once. The patio and pool terrace punctuate the home with a decidedly modern atmosphere, and there are on-site experiences available, from massages to private chef.

Around

Located outside of the famous village of Ostuni with its landmark trulli, cobbled streets, lively shops and markets, the home is easily accessible to the Adriatic coast by car in less than a half hour. Further afield are the famed beaches of Monopoli, where swimmers will find unspoiled bays, clear waters and the well-heeled port communities of Polignano a Mare and Monopoli. The Ionian beaches are also an easy drive, including much loved San Pietro.

Sightseeing in the region includes Lecce, the “Florence of Southern Italy,” located about an hour away, or smaller Ceglie Messapica, with its lively restaurant scene and local vineyards. The home also makes a great base for exploring some of the region’s most charmed villages, including Cisternino, designated one of Italy’s “most beautiful small towns,” and of course, postcard pretty Alberobello, where more than 1,500 trulli homes have made the town a protected UNESCO World Heritage site.
