A PHDD Arquitectos Farmhouse in the Alentejo Plains
Vagar do Pastor takes its name from a Portuguese expression meaning the unhurried pace of the shepherd—a word for being present without agenda. Owner Carlos Jones, who spent his childhood watching golden Alentejo fields pass by the car window, commissioned Lisbon atelier PHDD Arquitectos to build it in 2024. The result is a single-story home that follows the logic of traditional Alentejo rural architecture—handmade terracotta floors, whitewashed masonry, warm terracotta tones—while opening generously to the land. Views from the north side of the house reach across the montado to the Serra d'Ossa. An outdoor pool, a barbecue terrace, and 2,600 square meters of natural meadow complete the picture.
The open central volume connects a living room with fireplace to a dining area and fully equipped kitchen. There is no television — a projector handles evening films. Generous ceiling heights and large windows keep the interiors luminous without losing the thermal weight of thick Alentejo walls. Air conditioning is installed throughout. Free Wi-Fi across the house. A cot is available on request. The overall feel is spare: few objects, chosen carefully.
A barbecue terrace and outdoor dining area open directly from the kitchen and living room to the east meadow. Two of the bedrooms have access to an outdoor shower. The outdoor pool sits within a natural meadow, which slopes toward the reservoir at Lucefécit. Sheep graze on neighboring land within sight of the house. The horizon is unbroken.
What we love
This place breathes slow living. Handmade terracotta tiles underfoot, white walls, sheep grazing somewhere beyond the window—vagar is the Portuguese word for the unhurried pace of the shepherd, without agenda but fully present. The light moves through the home all day, and the views from the pool in the meadow go all the way to the The Serra d'Ossa in the north. If you feel like venturing out, Raya is worth the 20-minute drive, a farm-to-beach restaurant on the Alqueva river beach where nearly everything on the plate was growing on the Terramay regenerative farm that morning.
