Classic Comporta Style
With their thatched rooflines and reed facades crossed by bright, beachy strips of whitewashed wood, these coastal cabanas in the Brejos da Carregueira de Baixo residential enclave exude classic Comporta styling. The Alentejo’s trademark rice fields surround the vivid home, a breezy compound of multiple cabanas housing an elevated living/dining/kitchen area, five high-ceilinged bedrooms, both shaded and sun-drenched terraces, and boardwalks that wind through the garden and pool.
Classic Comporta
Built in in the original Comporta aesthetic, this series of thatched-roof reed shacks turned boho chic beach residences takes its cues from the typical fishermen’s and rice farmer’s huts of Comporta’s first locals before the town transformed into the designer playground it is today.
Spread across 500 square meters, this multi-cabana retreat offers views across its lush garden and pool terrace into the serene rice paddies of the Brejos da Carregueira. Five bedrooms (four queens, one double twin, all ensuite) are joined to the spacious, pitched ceilinged living and dining cabana by a series of cozy terraces and pretty pathways through the sandy, native grass and shrub-planted lot. Interiors are stylish and refined, a cool, coastal environment that’s easygoing and airy, with whitewashed walls and exposed wooden beams overhead—some beams dramatically ebonized, some milkwashed, some raw wood, and others offset by cane. Textiles and art add color. Baths are sparkling and modern. And furnished sitting porches line the varied facades of both the common cabana and the more intimate ones. Tucked just beyond the garden green, a jade-toned tiled pool pops out of the sandy landscaping.
Around
Located in the Brejos da Carregueira de Baixo residential area, one of Comporta’s most exclusive residential enclaves, the home is 550 meters from sandy Brejos beach, and offers easy access to the famed beaches of Carvalhal, Pego and Comporta. The town of Comporta is a quick drive away, and the property offers the best of both worlds—a sophisticated location and hushed, rural serenity. The cabanas overlook rice fields, and there’s a piney wood as a backdrop. Originally a fishing village on the dramatic Alentejo coastline, Comporta has become a hip destination these last few years, home to fashionistas and global nomads who have transformed the modest coastal village into a favored getaway, bringing boutique hotels and sleek, modern architecture to this mostly unspoiled coastline.
A land of cork oak trees and citrus groves, glinting stands of olive trees and low-lying rice fields, Comporta is a picturesque mix of the nostalgic and brand new. Agricultural family homes neighbor artisanal boutiques, and there’s a lively gallery scene in addition to both simple and glitzier cafes. Lovers of the laid-back and rugged will thrill with horseback rides along the Atlantic’s rolling surf. The area’s golden beaches extend for miles, backed by dunes, cliffs, and windsculpted pines—beaches known for their big, rolling waves loved by surfers. Not to be missed are the beaches of Carvalhal and Pego, and a bit further, Praia da Galé-Fontainhas, Praia da Comporta and Praia da Melides. Protected lagoons, their waters rich with birds and wildlife, fill the region’s coastline and include Lagoa de Santo André and Lagoa de Melides. Walkers will love the Vereda de Melides footpath and the BioMelides pedestrian route, and serious hikers should try the more vigorous Rota da Serra de Grândola that circles inland through a massive cork-oak forest and over hills crisscrossed by streams. The nearby Troia peninsula draws kite and wind surfers and the Sado Estuary is a natural wetland reserve with resident flamingos, otters, dolphins, and more than 250 types of protected birds.
