Big, Bright and Boho
Bright, boxy and beaming, this whitewashed villa on the Cycladic island of Antiparos offers eight seaview bedrooms and an overflowing infinity pool only a few steps out of its doors. Walking distance to the beach too, the recently built island retreat is textural and low-key cool, a contemporary oasis of natural tones, stones and textiles in soothing hues.
A Contemporary Cycladic Island Villa
Blending Cycladic charm with modern luxury, this seaview villa, overlooking the preserved island of Despotiko and a natural, sailboat-pocked bay, offers two pools and proximity to beaches. Its vast angular volumes are able to accommodate 16 guests across eight seaview bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms with tubs.
The property occupies a manicured Mediterranean view garden with a pétanque pitch, barbecue, and shaded outdoor living area and patio, with views of the island’s sugar-cube villas stair-stepping to the vivid turquoise sea. And did we mention two swimming pools?
Around
Located a short walk to the beach on the outskirts of an Antiparos village, the villa strikes a decidedly modern pose among the island’s well known blue and white village residences. One of the lesser-traveled Cycladic isles, Antiparos lives up to the Greek island dreamscape with its cat-inhabited stone streets, its whitewashed communities draped in bougainvillea, and its wraparound village ports that stretch into sandy beaches. Narrow alleys reveal artisan boutiques and free-flowing, music-filled tavernas.
The island’s top attraction—besides summertime resident Tom Hanks—is Antiparos Cave, a 100-meter deep, stalagmite and stalactite strewn cavern remembered as a temple to the Goddess Artemis. The cave’s oldest stalagmite is believed to be Europe’s oldest, at 45 million years old. At the cavern’s entrance stands the blue-doored, 18th-century chapel of Agios Ioannis Spiliotis. Another sanctuary to see is just off the coast of Antiparos on Despotiko Island, served by boat tours. After taking in the church and requisite Greek archeological site, head to Despotiko’s beaches.
Back on Antiparos, Livadia Beach is a local surf spot, and Soros is loved for its long stretch of sand and deep blue waters. The southern part of Antiparos is pocked with sea caverns underwater and picturesque coves, both worth touring with a local guide. Other recreation includes biking or scootering the rugged isle. After hours in Antiparos, though tamer than its Cycladic sister islands, are boisterous and buzzy, with an animated street scene in the main village’s heart, dotted with bars, cafes, and taverns.
