Hatari offers two destinations on this legendary safari circuit, located between Tanzania's famous mountains. Hatari Lodge on the slopes of Mount Meru, and Shu'mata Camp within view of Mount Kilimanjaro. Both offer a way to escape the overcrowded Serengeti, and combine Swahili hospitality with international expectations.
Hatari Lodge, located in the Arusha National Park, is a haven of modern luxury where Hollywood history, unique African design, and a parade of colourful creatures (from black-and-white colobus monkeys to shocking-pink flamingos) come together.
Shu’mata Camp is located on a hill in the Maasai tribal part of the semi-arid Amboseli ecosystem, with its shrubs, acacia trees, and elephants. An homage to the legendary 1920s safari spirit, Shu'mata is an intimate camp comprised of seven Hemingway-style tents, offering spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Both properties have a commitment to health and conservation that is felt most notably in the dining, which fuses locally-sourced foods with gourmet recipes.
We love the classic and nostalgic safari ambience and amazing rustic elegance. No wonder the Maasai call this land “heaven on earth”!
The tents at Shu'mata have been designed and positioned to capture the stunning landscape, with 360-degree views of the savannah and Kilimanjaro. Positioned in a line along the ridge, there are a total of seven that form the unique and adventurous compound.
Each of the tents is self contained, with a full bath and private veranda with room for four. With a sophisticated approach to a traditional safari camp, the interiors and decor have all been designed as a tribute to the bygone era, and are chic and colorful.
Meanwhile, the Hatari Lodge is a former farm that was once the setting for Howard Hawks' film Hatari! Today, it's a luxury bush lodge located in woodlands on the edge of the Momella meadow and adjacent to the vast Arusha National Park. The lodge delivers legendary safari spirit with an unexpectedly retro modern design aesthetic.
Hatari is independently owned and is the result of a deep understanding of its neighboring landscapes and inhabitants. The rooms and facilities have personalities that reveal secrets about regional art forms, and the experience is designed to allow guests to “dwell poetically”. Hatari is a unique and idyllic retreat, perfect for exploring wild and beautiful Africa.
