THE TREASURES OF ARLES
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Arles is a treasure trove of Roman history and culture (as well as the one-time residence of Van Gogh during his most productive period). Arles is famous as an artistic cultural center and hosts important international contemporary art fairs as well as the international event for photography, Les Rencontres d'Arles. It's also home to the recently opened Van Gogh Museum which features an annual exhibition of new paintings along with two exhibitions a year by several renowned artists influenced by van Gogh.
The LUMA Foundation in association with architect Frank Gehry is currently building its experimental cultural center in the Parc des Ateliers scheduled to open in 2018.
Located at the crossroads of the Camargue, Alpilles and Crau regions, the city sits along the Rhone within reach of the best of southern Provence. The river delta region of the Camargue and National Park is just a short drive south and offers amazing biodiversity of species including the famous wild horses. Both Nimes and Avignon are with a half-hour drive and you can reach Aix-en-Provence in under an hour. The coastal cities of Marseille and Montpellier are just an hour away.
