Alpenglow Cabin

Twin Lakes, Colorado
Rocky Mountain Alpenglow

This cabin rental in Colorado is an ideal escape for those hearty, adventurous souls that embrace the call of the wild and meet nature on its own terms. The burnished glow that appears at the mountain summits at sunset and sunrise, the alpenglow phenomenon elicits that cozy feeling you get curled up by the fire after a day of drinking in the brisk high altitudes of nature and adventure. Hence this cabin's name.

A true wilderness experience, you'll share the mountains with their natural inhabitants of bears, mountain lions, elk and moose, bighorn sheep and foxes in addition to the seasonal and migratory critters, with the welcoming comforts of a thoughtfully designed retreat to nestle in to.

The stylishly composed renovations amp up the design quotient while still highlighting the already spectacular natural beauty and heart-stopping views. Ditch your tech tether to truly unplug here (services are limited to weather-dependent Wifi and no TV), and indulge in nature without distractions.

Alpenglow Cabin, Twin Lakes, COLORADO |

Featured in Dwell, Travel + Leisure, Apartment Living, Lonely Planet, and more, this cabin rental in Colorado is immersed within vast expanses of national forest just minutes from the largest glacial lakes among the state's epic natural beauty. Set at the base of Independence Pass, on the Twin Lakes side, it's along one of the world's top scenic drives.

Designed in the classic Alpine style, the home is both rustic and refined with an open-concept space and vaulted ceilings with wide-plank hardwood floors and that distinctive Hygge sense of comfort. There's a fully equipped kitchen with a handmade white oak dining table, comfy seating around the HearthStone wood-burning stove, and cathedral windows that perfectly frame the spectacular views of La Plata, the fifth highest peak in the Rockies.

The ensuite master bedroom is on the main floor with two additional bedrooms upstairs (note that the upstairs bedroom with full bed is rather small), and there are two luxurious, vintage-inspired bathrooms with spa amenities.

The wraparound deck includes a hot tub with dining and lounge spaces for relaxing and soaking in the views. The cabin is surrounded on all sides by rugged mountains, so there are hundreds of miles of trails and gorgeous wildflower hikes, with rushing rivers in summer and magical snowscapes in winter. A true nature lover's paradise.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGHS

As the highest county in the Rocky Mountains, Lake County offers some of Colorado's most spectacular sites and endless options for hiking, back-country skiing, snowshoeing, paddling, rafting, rock-climbing, and mountain biking.

La Plata Mountain trailhead is less than a five-minute drive and Mt. Elbert, Colorado's highest peak, and the Colorado Trail is just down the road. The twin lakes trails around Interlaken, a fascinating abandoned Victorian-era resort from the 1800s are nearby but only accessible by boat or hike.

Independence Pass closes in early November through late May with up to 140 inches of snow per year (check cotrip for status), creating “the prettiest dead-end road in Colorado," and blissful seclusion. Open dates typically fall on Memorial Day through the first week in November.

The sleepy Twin Lakes village is ten minutes from the cabin where you'll find the Inn & Saloon restaurant that's been open since the 1800s and the General Store where you can get the basics. There are also a couple of food trucks that roll through, an art gallery, and boat rentals. The village mostly shuts down during the winter, although the Inn & Saloon restaurant stays open on weekends.

Both Leadville and Buena Vista are within a half-hour's drive and the glittering Aspen is just forty minutes north (Note that in winter when the pass is closed—early November to late May—there is no access to Aspen from the house side of the pass).

It's two hours southwest of Denver.

Notes We are licensed by Lake County License #2023-068. *Self check-in. Will provide door code a few days in advance of arrival. *No trash or recycling service (addresses for local drop points will be provided). *No cell service or landline. We suggest you activate WiFi calling on your phone or download WhatsApp ahead of time and use our Starlink satellite WiFi. While not as fast as city internet, Starlink is the fastest available satellite internet in the world. *No TV. *No washer/dryer. *No AC. No one has it up here. :) Mountain nights are cool and we have fans if needed. *The cabin sits just shy of 10,000 feet. Please educate yourself on altitude sickness. Drink tons of water, avoid alcohol/caffeine, and take it easy your first day to help yourself acclimate. If you're coming from sea level, it's a great idea to spend a night at ~5000 feet (i.e. Denver area) before coming up to the high country. *Please be aware our cabin is truly in the mountains and it's surrounded by National Forest. Bear, fox, mountain lion, elk, moose, etc. live here too. Do not feed the wildlife and be aware of your surroundings. Do not leave trash or food outside or in your car and please clean the grill after each use. We want to protect the wild creatures by NOT encouraging them to visit! *Please note that Twin Lakes village is tiny and only open seasonally (summer/fall). Our closest full-service towns are 30 minutes away so we suggest loading up on groceries and gas ahead of time so you can relax once you're here. :) *4WD/AWD and snow tires/chains required in winter (Nov-May). We get over 140 inches of snow/year. This property hosts photoshoots. Please inquire for details.

No campfires or charcoal grills anywhere on the property. No parties, events, or loud music/noise. (We love our neighbors!) No smoking, vaping, or drugs. No shooting guns, hunting, explosives, or fireworks. No weapons. No pets. No extra guests. No commercial/brand photo shoots without prior consent. (Reach out if interested!) Alpine septic system. Small amounts of TP only, please. :) No trash/food left outside or in cars; please clean the grill and tools after each use (we do get occasional visits from bears and other curious creatures and we don't want to encourage them) Please do not rearrange the furniture or move the concrete patio table (it's heavy and will crack if you try). We do not have trash service in our remote location. Please take your trash to local garbage drops (we will provide addresses). Please be extra vigilant with anything that could start a fire (wood stove, oven, candles, grill). We are surrounded by National Forest and 20 miles from the nearest fire station. Please review our guidelines about the wood stove (don't start a fire your final morning, don't remove hot ash or wood, keep door latched if you need to leave, etc.). In the summer/fall we have a 6-person Tentsile tree hammock set up outside. Please don't move it, use at your own risk, and remember it's NOT a trampoline. :) Please let us know if you break something or if something is missing. We are sure we can come to an easy resolution and we need to know so we can replace it. We ask that you treat our home with respect, as you would your own. Thank you!
