This two-bedroom home in Palm Desert was designed by renowned architect William Krisel as part of the now-famous Sandpiper complex. With its dramatic low-slung roofs and sand-colored stucco, it is believed by many to be the finest mid-century townhouse complex in the Coachella Valley. William Krisel has a remarkable legacy, and his dedication to the creation of affordable modern housing contributed to the creation of around 30,000 homes across Southern California alone. In fact, in the Fifties, he is said to have helped double the size of Palm Springs by creating complexes like the Sandpiper.
The collection of 306 homes in 17 circles was built in phases between 1958 and 1969. Although the homes were created using standard templates, they retain their own personalities with unique rooflines and varied use of concrete, shadow and breeze blocks. Owners were offered flexible room dividers to customize interior spaces, and each home had a different orientation, to maximize privacy. Large windows opening onto covered patios allowed for year-round indoor-outdoor living, and this particular home boasts a 36ft long wall of sliding glass doors onto its mountain-view patio.
