Perched on a remote edge of Zion National Park in the wilds of Utah, Lazalu offers a unique perspective on the American Southwest: solitude, wilderness and exploration without the crowds. It was a secluded artists' retreat for 20 years, but its owner, documentary filmmaker Robert Perkins, now welcomes guests. This elegant, rustic space consists of two separate units. This vacation home rental in Utah is a place to disappear into, to read and write poetry, to use as a base for exploring the stunning landscape of Zion National Park... or to simply stargaze. Made from ancient adobe, the Adobe Suite is the smaller of the two main units and is organized around large glass doors that swing open into views of Cave Valley and Zion Park. It has one double bed and a private bathroom with walk-in tiled shower.
From the outside, the larger Guest House has a deeply earthy feel, as if hewn from the landscape and weathered by the winds. Interiors are open plan with an abundance of natural light and a cool blend of industrial design and Southwest furnishings. An oversized marble bathtub takes center stage in the living room, with views through the huge main window (and adjacent cross-shaped window) across the desert floor to the mountains beyond.
Lazalu is off-grid with its own well and solar power system. The property includes a common area with access to a kitchen and an outdoor shower. There is an additional small cabin available for work or quiet contemplation in the nearby oak grove.
The manager's house is located on the same site but is private. Guests are welcome to ask questions or borrow from the library of 2,000 art books, literature and poetry.
ZION
Lazalu is 40 minutes from Springdale and Hurricane, local towns with all the amenities, restaurants and nightlife. But Zion National Park is the big draw—124,000 acres of wilderness "untrammeled by man, a place where man himself is a visitor who does not remain." Visitors can hike paths explored by ancient peoples and pioneers, enjoy the massive sandstone cliffs in cream, pink and blue, as well as the canyons and forested mesas.
There are numerous trails right outside the house, or within a short drive, including the Subway, Wildcat and Hop Valley trails. Licensed guides are available, and the manager has a wealth of knowledge about things to do in the area, including canyoneering, climbing, ATV rides, zip lines and fishing.
The property is located at 5,800ft in elevation.
