A New Take on the Cabin in the Woods
Flanked by mature trees in a bright clearing, this linear vacation home rental in Maine makes use of clerestory windows, rough-sawn pine ceilings and concrete floors to set it apart as a modern version of the cabin-in-the-north-woods classic.
A modern minimalist aesthetic pervades at this compact, newly constructed cabin set within a clearing on a densely wooded, seven-acre lot. Designed to provide shelter from the region’s legendary Nor’easters, the long, lean structure is built to hug its hillside and offers residents views onto a sweet, green meadow when warming up cozily next to its Nordic-designed wood stove.
White walls keep the cabin bright, and clerestory windows along the structure’s north wall allow for natural light. Furnishings are simple and clean-lined, showcasing several pieces designed by the cabin’s architect and furniture designer Eric Nation, whose studio and art gallery in Searsport, Maine, exhibits his design work.
When outdoor living is at its optimum, the cabin offers a pebbled terrace facing the meadow. Bench seating and a fire pit fill the terrace’s widest angle, slightly elevated about the meadow and tucked into the berm.
There is an automatic back-up Generac system in place, should the power go out, as well as fiber optic cable that's ideal for remote work.

This vacation home rental in Maine is set on seven acres bordering a acreage of protected land outside the coastal town of Belfast, on Maine’s central shore above the Passagassawaukeag River. (Say that three times, fast!) The picturesque town’s Main Street and waterfront are nationally registered heritage areas, a place where leafy, manicured yards surround ornate brick residences and commercial buildings.
Farming and a thriving fishing culture mean the area is a go-to for farm-to-table fare, and the town hosts two farmers’ markets, one the state’s largest. Outdoor activities in and around Belfast include the harbor walk, the graveled, restored Belfast Rail Trail and hiking trails within the Coastal Mountains Land Trust.
A 47-mile footpath, the Hills to Sea Trail, links the inland town of Unity to Belfast. And of course water activities—sea kayaking, rowing, sailing, fishing, and visits to the working harbor—are many in the region where river meets sea. The nearby community of Knox is famed for its many lighthouses, and the region is also home to the Camden Hills State Park and the Acadia National Park.
