Like many of the local gems scattered throughout the desert communities, this modern vacation rental in Palm Desert traces its roots back to the mid-century architectural boom by some of the era's most celebrated architects.
Built and designed in 1963 by the team of Patten & Wild, this home's artistic pedigree jumps ahead to the '80s, with the co-founder of the band Devo who bought and expertly restored it. A mid-century modern aficionado, he carefully maintained many of the original period details such as the glass and textile block walls, both slate and cork floors, and the split rock fireplace, while skillfully integrating modern amenities.
This is classic mid-century at its best. Located just east of Palm Springs, this modern vacation rental in Palm Desert was built in 1963 by architects Patten & Wild and was subsequently bought and elegantly restored by Eighties mega-band Devo's co-founder.
The single-story ranch-style home's architectural integrity has been maintained throughout, and features the distinctive slanted roof lines, high beamed ceilings, open-plan living areas with a split rock fireplace and walls of floor to ceiling glass framing the pool and gardens, and views of Mt. Eisenhower. The kitchen has been updated with all new appliances for gourmet-quality meal preparation and dining alfresco. The large en-suite master bedroom features gorgeous mountain views and opens up to the pool. There's a second double bedroom with expansive mountain views and a shared guest bath.
A large attached casita includes its own full kitchen, living room and an outdoor patio overlooking the yoga area and citrus orchard with mountain views and the smaller attached casita includes one double bedroom with a private entrance from the pool area.
Furnished with an imaginative and stylish selection of handpicked decor and vintage items, the house and interiors are seamless and chic. An entertainer's dream getaway, it has a large and private garden with a pool and lounge areas, an oversized firepit, a BBQ grill, and a bar with dining areas. AROUND
The house is located in Palm Desert just 30 minutes from Palm Springs. Like its neighbor, Palm Desert is backed by the San Jacinto mountains that rise above the desert floor and are lined with miles of hiking trails at a cooler elevation.
The town is a mecca of resorts and country clubs, with the central El Paseo square lined with boutiques, restaurants and art galleries. Part of the greater Coachella Valley, the area plays host to the annual music and arts festival every Spring.
Both Joshua Tree National Park and the breathtaking Indian Cove are within an hour's drive from the house, as is historic Pioneertown. A kitschy Hollywood relic founded in the '40s as an authentic frontier town movie set, today there are a few shops, cafes and galleries to visit including the famous Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace.
There are several unique attractions and interesting local museums and art venues to visit, such as the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum, and the famed Integratron.
