Kyoto, Japan
An Authentic Kyo-Machiya Townhouse Experience in the Heart of Kyoto

The origin of this vacation home rental in Kyoto is an incarnation of a pipe dream we all risk having: A group of friends found themselves discussing their experiences of Japan, the way fervent enthusiasts of Japan do. Cultural and culinary addresses were exchanged of course, and on that fateful day, nondescript hotel stays were specifically lamented, leading to a discussion of buying a home together that can be shared with like-minded friends.

The discussion soon centered on Kyoto, as all agreed that it is the city that epitomizes Japanese culture, cuisine, and architectural environment in perfect harmony, with an ideal pace of life thrown in. And the lamentation leaned towards the dwindling number of Kyo-Machiyas, those beautiful wooden townhouses that represent all we long to know about traditional Japanese city living. Since 2010, the number of Kyo-Machiyas have been whittled from 50,000 to 8000, all in the name of progress, practicality, and the ever-dreaded foe of heritage architecture: parking lots.

And so it was clear: Kyoto was the chosen city, and the preservation of Kyo-Machiyas would be the architectural endeavor. The friends acquired two Kyo-Machiyas, each over a century old, and committed to engaging Kyotorian artisans with the necessary traditional know-how for the restoration, to offer a home that is made in Kyoto, by Kyoto craftsmen, for the world.

What we love? The anecdote of the artisan who took to the task of reinforcing a structural pillar by grafting on new piece of wood, painstakingly carving the grain patterns of the older wood into the new before oiling and staining it to ensure a seamless blend. What we love most? You won’t be able to see this masterpiece, because the pillar was always meant to be hidden in the walls.

This is the beauty of BenTen East: heartfelt details, a commitment to authenticity, and attention we can feel.

BenTen East, Kyoto, Japan | vacation home rentals

Over a century old and located in one of the most historic parts of the old capital, this vacation home rental in Kyoto is one of the first in a conservation effort by the owners to preserve the heritage and design of traditional architecture and housing.

Owned by a group of friends passionate about Japanese culture, craftsmanship and tradition, the two-storey townhouse was meticulously restored entirely by hand by skilled artisans. Constructed of interlocking wooden beams (no screws were used), the original timber structure and parts of the original clay walls remain but have been enhanced with contemporary finishing and fittings, injecting modern design and engineering elements.

The ground floor is designed to be the key communal area for guests and features a living area that looks out on a small interior garden, a tatami room that can be prepared as a bedroom for two, and a fully equipped kitchenette. The upper floor features a Western-style master bedroom with attached dressing room, a second tatami room, and guest bathroom. The stairway landing was cleverly designed as a separate space for reading and quiet reflection.

Long the heart of tradition and culture in Japan, this faithfully restored Machiya in Kyoto plays a part in creating history for future generations.

The owners have a variety of experiences on offer. Whether you’re interested in making sushi or delicate wagashi confections, in learning about meditation or the Way of Tea, in booking an entire restaurant for a family celebration, or in a hiking, cycling or driving holiday, your hosts will help make it happen. Visit in February for plum blossom season, lesser known than cherry blossom but equally lovely.

THE JEWEL OF JAPAN

Rich with history and considered the center of traditional Japanese culture, Kyoto is over a thousand years old and is one of the most well-preserved examples of ancient Japan. A stunningly beautiful city, it's also surrounded by lush highlands and forests.

One of eleven municipalities, Higashiyama is located in the eastern region across the Kamo River and is home to some of the city’s most famous and scenic areas. Strict development regulations have preserved the neighborhood’s historic character where you’ll be transported back in time. The district’s many temples, shrines, and UNESCO world heritage sites are all within walking distance including: Kenninji Temple, Kyomizu Temple, Hokan-ji Temple known as Yasaka Pagoda, Rokuhara Mitsuji Temple, and countless other historical sites.

The neighboring Geisha district of Gion features one of the most historical streets in the country (Hanamikoji-dori) and the Gosho-Higashi neighborhood around the Imperial Palace is surrounded by the largest green spaces in the city, making it an ideal base for walking and exploring the parks along the Kamo River.
