Award-Winning Architecture Set in Raw, Natural Beauty
Set in an awe-inspiring landscape on over 4,000 acres, this award-winning home has perfected its place within the environment evoking a strong sense of timelessness and belonging. Exquisitely composed on a massive scale with locally sourced materials, we love the feeling of calm sophistication and raw, natural beauty.
Located along the Banks Peninsula in the dramatic volcanic landscape of New Zealand’s South Island, this award-winning home is designed as the centerpiece of a remote and wild cove with breathtaking views of the ocean and mountains. Conceived and designed by Auckland based architect Andrew Patterson, the home was commissioned by an expatriate New Zealander as a base for farm and coastal activities and is part of a large homestead originally settled in the late 19th century. Accessible only by helicopter or 4-wheel-drive vehicle, the property was designed as a rural farm retreat for up to 14 guests.
Shortlisted for the World Building of the Year, the house is constructed largely from locally sourced macrocarpa wood, quarried stone and steel, its horizontal silhouette seamlessly integrated into the land in perfect relationship to the natural environment. The open plan layout includes the towering great room with a large stone fireplace and walls of glass overlooking the shore, with both seaward and leeward exterior environments. The sleek modern kitchen is off to the side and is perfect for entertaining with a dining area opposite the fireplace that seats fourteen. There are three ocean front suites each with deep free-standing tubs and a bunk room with eight bunk beds ideal for the kids.
The dramatic architecture is softened by a selection of neutral textiles and custom contemporary furnishings and fittings. The outdoor lounge and pool area is positioned for maximum effect with stunning views and uninterrupted solitude.
