We love the striking contrast of the crisp and new modern interiors housed in a centuries-old stone house. Fresh and bright, this home's complete transformation still respects its origins as a country house with some very clever and chic design detail.

Located in the Loire Valley region in the charming little hamlet of La Rocheblin, this 16th-century country house is one of the oldest in the region. Built entirely of stone, the house was in dire disrepair when it was found by the French couple who saw its potential and worked closely with a local architect to bring it back to life.

As natives of the Loire Valley region and enthusiastic fans of architecture, art, and design, the couple set about transforming the house without disturbing its natural shape and historic personality. At least from the outside....

Stripping it down to the most elemental raw space, the interiors are spacious and filled with natural light with double-height ceilings and an open plan layout that required a creative eye and a passion for design to transform it. Furnished with an eclectic combination of contemporary and antique pieces, the living area is intimate and bright with a fireplace and views of the countryside.

The large eat in kitchen and dining area open out to an additional terrace overlooking the gardens. The master suite is a private oasis and features an amazing overflow tub to relax and take in the view while the upstairs loft space is perfect for kids or additional guests. A pleasant all-season escape, this is a unique and stylish house to enjoy in the Loire valley.

THE CENTRAL LOIRE VALLEY

La Gaubretière is a quiet section in the central Loire Valley and an ideal spot from which to explore the region and its historic towns. You are within an hour to the wild Atlantic coast and some of the best beaches including La Tranche sur Mer as well as trips offshore to L'Ile-d'Yeu and Noirmoutier.

The ancient harbor city of La Rochelle (known as the "White City") lies just over an hour to the south and was one of the most important trade routes and ports and now features a modern marina as well as Renaissance history.

The industrial river port city of Nantes lies along the Loire River an hour north. Venture out to the famous castles that dot the valley along the river and discover the Sèvre Nantaise in nearby Clisson for day hikes.
