Grotheer Architektur Restores a Former Captain's House in a Modern Homage to its Seafaring Past
These vacation home rentals in Germany are an astonishing contrast of modern restoration and old world charm that deftly coexist. We like the bright and cheerful translation of the spaces and the elegant, contemporary design.
Located on the North Sea island of Fohr in the far northern reaches of Germany's western shores, this 19th-century former captains house is one of many on the island that harken back to the seafaring day of its early inhabitants. Set along a linden-lined village lane, the thatched roof structure dates back to 1814 and was used by farmers and sailors through the years.
Restored in 2015 by island-based Grotheer Architektur, the interior renovations are a complete departure from the period architecture and haven't disrupted the unique character and historical charm of the building.
Now divided into two separate vacation home rentals, each are similar in style and tone with fresh modern updates.
The west wing is divided over two floors and includes a bright and airy living room with a cozy fireplace as well as a chefs kitchen and dining space on the ground floor. There is a bright en-suite master bedroom here with its own garden terrace access and two double bedrooms upstairs, one with twin beds ideal for kids. There's also a full-sized sauna for a relaxing and therapeutic treat.
The ground floor of the east wing features an open and airy living space with a fireplace and kitchen area with two double bedrooms and one large shared bathroom upstairs.
Employing a crisp white palette with pastel-colored details, glass and light wood, the effect is cool and understated with chic design classics by Artemide, Fritz Hansen, Walter Knoll and Thonet and custom fixtures.
Outside the spacious gardens feature two terraces and play areas for kids where you'll be just a short walk to the village and the beach.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Wifi, TV with DVD player and stereo audio system. Housekeeping and laundry facilities. Children's cot beds, high chair, security gates, toys, games and shared sand pit. Two parking spots.
AROUND
Located off the farthest northern coast of Germany near the border of Denmark in the North Sea, the island of Fohr's unique ecosystem of lush vegetation and a mild climate are due to the gulf stream and its protected position between the islands of Amrum and Sylt. The second largest North Sea island in the country, it's just over 30 square miles around. The southern village of Nieblum is two miles south of the house and is considered the most beautiful on the island.
Home to many historic captains houses and remnants of the prosperous age of whaling from the 17th and 18th centuries, its beaches are wide and windswept. You'll pass through the UNESCO designated Wadden Sea National Park mud flats which are one of the only places in the world where you can you walk from one island to another on the sea bed. The nearby city of Wyk is a short drive and connects to the mainland ferries.
