A Restored 16th-Century Masseria Continues A Puglian Farming Legacy

Surrounded by eighty-five acres of vineyards and orchards, this beautifully restored Masseria is a secluded and enchanting retreat. A formerly abandoned ruin, it's now a chic hideaway with an emphasis on culture and nature and an inspiring and serene place of rustic elegance and tradition. We love the vaulted stonework, cool pale palette, and simple, luxurious style in and out.

Situated in a historically strategic and charmingly traditional location of Puglia, this authentic 16th-century Masseria or farmhouse has been painstakingly and beautifully restored by its architect owners. Initially built to resist attacks by invaders, the structure is typical of Puglia, with reinforced stone and brick and authentic historic features.

Some original details were lost to time and neglect but have been carefully recreated with accurate authenticity during restoration. Crafted largely of locally quarried tufo, a type of sandstone typical of the area, the vast vaulted stone ceilings cap expansive rooms recreating the historic aspects and detail of the original home. Designed to adapt to the seasons, the thick stone walls and floors keep the interiors cool in summer and warm in winter.

In keeping with the scale of the rooms, the furnishings are minimal and elegant, with both rustic and modern pieces designed to harmonize with the architecture and structure in a smooth balance of old and new and include hand-crafted pottery from the famous ceramics town of Grottaglie nearby. 

The main house features a great room with a massive fireplace along with a bright indoor dining area and a modern industrial kitchen perfect for entertaining. Upstairs there are four en-suite bedrooms and a roof terrace with another en suite double downstairs and two additional en suite bedrooms in the adjacent guest quarters. 

Surrounded by organic almond, apricot, pear, and fig trees, as well as extensive olive groves and vineyards, the property, is a vast and productive working farm that is as lovely as it is useful. There is a seasonal vegetable garden that provides the property with goodies for la cucina and two terraces for entertaining and dining al fresco. The pergola covered terrace sits next to the swimming pool and the large sunny courtyard provides additional space with grassy areas and lovely views. 

BETWEEN THE IONIAN & ADRIATIC 

Just outside of the famous ceramics town of Grottaglie, this region of Puglia sits between the Ionian and Adriatic coasts just a short drive east from the harbor town of Taranto. 

A mix of rich, layered cultures from over two thousand years of invasion, conquest, and settlement, the area features some of the most interesting cultural sites in southern Italy. 

The charming and unique UNESCO trulli dwellings and the medieval city of Ostuni of Alberobello are within a half-hour drive with the stunning Baroque city of Lecce just over fifty miles south. 

Don't miss the spectacular underground caves of Castellana Grotte an hour north. The nearest beaches, Bahia del Sol in the Marina di di Pulsano on the Ionian side and Paragrafo Beach on the Adriatic sea are within a short ride and the big city port town of Brindisi is thirty minutes southeast. The capital city of Bari is just over an hour's drive north.
