Swept Away In Umbria
When you imagine running away to Italy, it's for the sweeping vistas, breezy, light-filled rooms and beautiful objets d'art. This villa in Umbria has all of that. And an infinity pool.
This beautiful Umbrian farmhouse feels like it has been plucked from the pages of a romantic novel. Perhaps it's the ancient watchtower it was built around, which is certain to have lived through some dramatic times. Or maybe it's the setting—20 acres of lawns, olive trees and woods—that brings out the Merchant Ivory in us.
From the traditional stonework and wood-beamed ceilings to French windows just waiting to be thrown open onto rolling vistas, this is a home to enjoy decadently. We love the opulence of the clawfoot tubs, sweeping staircases, chandeliers and Roman statues, juxtaposed against the whimsy of the red heart rugs and modern art pieces. The furniture dances playfully between Marie Antoinette and mid-century.
Just outside the main entrance are outdoor seating areas, a table tennis table, an outdoor chessboard, a croquet lawn and a beautiful infinity-edged swimming pool overlooking the rolling hillside below.
All it needs is a few characters to lounge around the reading room or recline by the pool. Luckily there's plenty of room for an elegant gathering - or a couple of families. Spacious and airy, the farmhouse comfortably accommodates 8 to 10 guests.
Each bedroom has either an en-suite or private bathroom, making it perfect for couples or families. The ground-floor master bedroom is a suite with its own terrace, a dressing area, a clawfoot bath, as well as a separate wet room and toilet. There are two further large bedrooms and another master suite upstairs.
A spiral staircase leads to the tower room which offers futons as an extra sleeping option. Steps from the front door lead down to the first of two living spaces - a media room.
The other living room has a generous corner sofa, easy chairs, and a traditional wood-burning fireplace. Next door is a kitchen with modern appliances which opens out onto two separate seating areas; an outdoor deck with an umbrella and table seating six and an external covered loggia with a BBQ and seating for up to twelve.
If you arrive in the summer, help yourself to produce from the kitchen vegetable garden.
MONTONE
The villa is just minutes away from the walled medieval village of Montone. Although it is very small, with just over 1,000 inhabitants, Montone boasts several cafes and restaurants as well as a thriving arts scene. There are three supermarkets in Umbertide, which is about 10 minutes by car. The beautiful monastery town of Assisi, the Umbrian capital city of Perugia, and the Tuscan border are all within easy reach.
