Architect Antonio Gallo's Homage to Salento's Unique Architectural Elements
Inspired by and named in homage to the ancient Greek roots and influences of the nearby village of Martano, this luxury villa close to Lecce designed by architect Antonio Lorenzo Gallo combines the original style of the settlements of the region with modern architectural forms and earth elements.
The project was a labor of love and effort on behalf of a couple who built a second home for themselves and want to share their enthusiasm for the region with others.
Light box type apertures and interlocking Cubist forms of stacked locally quarried Lecce stone recall both Greek expressionism and the southernmost style of the Italian peninsula, in a harmonious dialogue with the land.
Surrounded by olive, fruit groves and Mediterranean gardens in the southern Salento landscape, this luxury villa in Lecce is a modern interpretation of both classic Italian and Greek expressionism.
Completed in 2018, the villa is derived from the influences of both cultures and was designed by architect Antonio Lorenzo Gallo, whose family has over a century of experience in design, construction and in-depth knowledge of local materials in the territory.
Constructed of local stone and marble, the main building consists of a spacious living room and lounge, a dining area that seats ten, and a semi-open, fully equipped kitchen, all with large sliding glass that opens out to both sides the pool and gardens.
The two larger bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and walk-in closets, with two smaller bedrooms that share a third bathroom with room for up to eight guests.
The spacious grounds include a bar and grill area with dining space, a changing room and outdoor shower and bathroom at the back of the pool area and stairs that lead to the roof top terrace overlooking the surrounding fields and the village of Martano,
You can sample the bounty from the more than one hundred fruit trees including lemons, oranges, figs, pomegranate, pears and cherries as well as the edible native cactus figs that populate the land.

AROUND
Located at the southernmost part of Italy’s heel on the Salento Peninsula outside of Martano, the villa is within a short drive from a number of authentic and charming Italian villages with lots of restaurants and bars nearby. Known as the Grecìa Salentina, the area has deep Grecian roots and many of the residents still speak an ancient Greek dialect.
The stunning Baroque city of Lecce, known as the Florence of the South, lies twenty five minutes to the North and the lovely UNESCO fortified port town of Otranto is 30 minutes to the South.
The Adriatic coast is within a short drive with some of the best beaches including Le Cesine and Nature Reserve, Baia dei Turchi, Torre Del Orso Santa Andrea and Alimini as well as those of the Ionian coast, a half hour west. Further south are the luxurious seaside resorts of Leuca and Santa Cesarea Terme.
