A 19th-Century Refuge is Reborn as a Striking Minimalist Masterpiece
From the owners who created Casas Caiadas Boutique Home – earning accolades from Monocle and Times Travel Magazine – comes Open House, a guest house in the vibrant heart of Arraiolos, just 20km from Évora. Embracing its former lives as a refuge in the 19th century and more recently the most famous bakery in the region, this three-story vacation rental in Portugal retains warmth and personality; one delightful quirk is its five entrance doors.
Radiating light, the first floor has stunning white brick arches and offers conversation areas among contemporary, locally-crafted furnishings. On the second level, there is one suite and three bedrooms, gleaming white with rugged accents. Artworks by João Bruno Design, Malga Ceramic Design, and Graça Paz Studio, offer graphic pops of color and texture.
The building is crowned with a large rooftop the perfect setting to enjoy the year-round sunny weather of Arriolos. From its sparkling blue pool, you can see one of Alentejo's most iconic images: a blanket of terracotta roofs ascending toward the sky.
Open House is a vacation rental in Portugal, hosting up to eight people, with four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. Besides daily breakfasts, it is possible to have all meals with local dishes prepared by a cook.

The Alentejo region, with its postcard villages and golden plains - is rich in history and culture and home to tranquil landscapes and many unique towns and castles of historical interest.
The nearby village of Arraiolos with its narrow, neatly lined streets, whitewashed architecture and artisan shops is a charming example of authentic rural life while the walled town of Estremoz just a half hour east has long been the site of the Rossio Marquês de Pombalone, one of Portugal’s finest markets. The tiny walled village of Monsaraz is a sleepy hilltop town with commanding views of the nearby Alqueva Lake and a short drive south are the fascinating and not-to-be-missed UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Evora and Elvas.
The entire region is an important frontier district with remnants of both Moorish and late 16th century battlements and fortifications including the fascinating megalithic complex of Almendres Cromlech. Lisbon is just an hour drive to the west as are the beautiful Atlantic Coast and Comporta Beach.
