Maan Architects Translates Barcelona's Modernist Movement Into A Hilltop Villa

The owner of this modernist villa north of Barcelona was inspired by the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion and the characters in "The City of Marvels" by Eduardo Mendoza to create a personal sanctuary that celebrates the city's early 20th-century social and artistic evolution - past and present.

Enlisting Antwerp-based Maan Architects to translate the tandem muses, the resulting structure utilizes both simple, neutral elements and both earthy and industrial materials into a holiday home in Barcelona that celebrates the many facets of the early Modern Movement.

Located in forested regions less than an hour north of the city,  the home is constructed of clean geometric lines and rises out of a limestone base, taking advantage of views of the natural landscape and the distant vistas of the Mediterranean.

Natural plaster and stone floors from Italy and Brazil are applied to the interiors and exteriors, with some of the same characteristics of the pavilion, with a precise geometry that's attuned to its natural environment.

The living, dining, and kitchen areas share the ground floor with slide-away glass that extends out to nature. The bedrooms face north, allowing cool breezes from the sea into the house during summer, while the terraces are oriented southwards towards the sunsets.

Cool off and take a dip in the pool, and enjoy breakfast as the light casts subtle reflections on the white walls and yellow sandstone.

Please note: The house has four bedrooms in total, but some may not be available. The two main bedrooms share access to one bathroom. Two of the bedrooms are accessible only from the exterior of the house. Rooms are minimally furnished. Please inquire with owner to clarify that the setup is what you are looking for, and to make sure the number of rooms you need are available.

EAST OF BARCELONA

The house is less than an hour east of Barcelona and just 20 minutes to the Mediterranean and many of Catalonia’s best beaches, hidden coves, wooded walking trails through the surrounding pine forests, and 10 minutes from the village of Sant Vicenc Montalt.

A seaside town of celebrated artistic, culinary and cultural treasures, Barcelona is home to a stunning array of Gothic, Medieval, Romanesque and Modernist masterpieces all housed along the sparkling Mediterranean with the Collserola Hills as a backdrop.

The famous Eixample district is an area that has reinvented itself as one of the premier dining destinations of Barcelona with world-class cuisine as well as a colorful and quirky area of shops, bars and cultural spaces in neighboring Raval. The Passeig de Gracia and Rambla Catalunya are praised by locals for being one of the nicest in central Barcelona. Sometimes referred to as the Cuadrado de Oro, it’s the epicenter for modernism in Barcelona and features the work of modernist architects Antoní Gaudi, Enric Sagnier and Doménech I Muntaner.
