This vacation home rental in Scotland was originally built in 1703 and is one of the oldest buildings in the town of Dalkeith. Restored by its owners in 2015, the imposing three-story stone house is now available as an upscale hideaway 

Set on 3.5 acres of landscaped and wooded gardens on the banks of the River Esk, it boasts an indulgent heated swim spa on its expansive terrace, which is perfect for exercising or relaxing – no matter the weather.

Inside, the home has a contemporary finish, with original raw materials like stone and wood used to echo its heritage and provide a traditional, country-house feel. Decor selected by the home's owner mixes antiques with new design, fusing a classic British look with touches of colonial and Far Eastern flair.

There are five en-suite bedrooms that sleep up to 10 guests, and three living rooms. On the ground floor there's a sunroom with glass on three sides, with sweeping views across the garden. When it's cold outside, make the most of the remote-controlled fireplace and comfy sofas. 

The hub of the house is the Orangery with its dining room that sits 10 guests and is serviced by a professional-grade kitchen. There's also a small den with its own bar, which is the place to enjoy a wee dram, if the mood grabs you.

On the first floor, you'll find the Drawing Room with a fireplace, hidden TV, window seats, Indian silks and linens. It's a great spot to watch a movie or curl up in front of the fire.

The house is conveniently located eight miles from the center of Edinburgh, and just 20 minutes' drive from the airport, making it the perfect destination for larger groups wanting to spend a few days near the Scottish capital or on the links of the nearby Golf Coast.

Pliates classes can be booked and taken in the swim spa. Bedrooms have super-king Hypnos wool and cashmere beds with 325 thread count sheets, feather pillows, feather duvets, pure cotton quilts, and mohair throws. Bathrooms have rain showers (some over baths), heated floors, toiletries from the Scottish Fine Soaps Company, and fluffy white bathrobes. Hairdryers and slippers are also provided.

AROUND

Dalkeith is a small town, eight miles to the south east of Edinburgh. A historical burgh, it boasts a lovely country park, home to the 18th-century Dalkeith Palace, Montagu Bridge (designed by celebrated Scots architect Robert Adam), and a kids' adventure playground.

To the north west, you'll find Edinburgh, Scotland's capital. One of Europe’s most beautiful cities, it is spread across a series of hills, with its medieval Old Town and majestic castle looking out across the elegant, neoclassical gardens and townhouses of New Town below.

To the east, you'll find East Lothian, which has over 40 miles of coastline and sandy beaches. Hike the John Muir Way, wander the rolling hills of the Lammermuirs, explore the seaside town of North Berwick, and scramble around the rugged windswept ruins of Tantallon Castle.

The house is located within easy distance of 22 golf courses along the East Lothian coast, including Muirfield, which was recently voted one of the world's top five courses, Gullane, which hosted the Scottish Open in 2018, and Royal Musselburgh, the sixth oldest golf course in the world. St Andrews and Gleneagles are a little farther afield but make great day trips. The managers are happy to arrange tee times and transport.
