A Catskills Resort Restored with Love
This 1870s farmhouse has been completely and lovingly renovated and filled with great art and bespoke details. With its unique sense of history and laid-back vibe, it has been dubbed "the vortex" by the owner's friends and family. In other words, it's a place you can disappear into. And we all need to do just that, from time to time.
The home is situated on five acres of land, by a creek that flows into the Hudson River. The front porch affords views of countless birds, including bald eagles and herons, as well as beavers, deer and jumping fish. Then there's that gorgeous light and those sunsets that make the Hudson Valley famous.
The pool sits in the middle of flower gardens where color and fragrance and big blue skies abound. There's plenty of seating on the patios, and a firepit too - so there's always a quiet place to chill out.
Owner, interior designer Beth Darragh, handpicked everything carefully, from the new front porch to the lawns. "When I bought this house," she tells us, "I wanted to fill it with art and color and details from my travels, and from other artist friends. I wanted to love what I was looking at, no matter where in the house I was.
"The collection includes large-scale canvases from our dear friend and Brooklyn-based graffiti artist, Mr Ewok One. Danielle Duer paints these powerful women and animals in fantastical settings, their personas spilling into the room they inhabit. There's a juxtaposition between the two artists that works so well.
"The buddhas were bought at Brimfield Antique Show. I found the Eames chair on a street in Queens, abandoned after an apartment fire and sent it to one of the premier restoration houses in the country to be loved again. The dining table was made by a carpenter in Texas. Most of the upholstered pieces, inside and out, were made by another talented artist friend and seamstress, Deborah Woodbridge.
"It's a house with intention and inspiration," she adds, "with soul and just a bit of cheekiness and mostly with love and light."
