The island is connected to mainland Greece by bridge, and a picturesque road to reach the capital travels between sea and lagoon, where a 14th-century fortress still stands facing the breathtaking turquoise waters. Pine forests and rocky outcroppings provide the backdrop to some of the island’s more remote beaches, and a handful of other villages worth exploring are only a short drive away.
