Architects Mezzo Atelier Breathe New Life Into A Generations-Old Azorean Farm
Breathing new life into this old barn, architects Mezzo Atelier have reimagined this holiday home in the Azores as two modern guesthouses that still adhere to the unique character of traditional houses of the islands. We love the vibrant pink hue, the architectural translation that makes the transition so seamlessly, and the beautiful economy of design.
Belonging to the same family for six generations, this holiday home in the Azores was completely transformed from a century-old barn by Portuguese architectural firm Mezzo Atelier.
Surrounded by over five acres of gardens, orchards and woodlands, the house was completely and meticulously reconstructed, adapting a treasured family heirloom into two contemporary guest houses that retain their historic Portuguese charm and tradition.
The house offers wide open spaces spread over two floors, while the cottage is a cozy private suite for two. Both have simple contemporary aesthetics, with a serene pale palette and a stylish mix of charming vintage and modern details, allowing the rural and timeless character of the pre-existing barn to remain.
In addition to the structural transformation, the firm redesigned the interiors and furnishings enlisting and collaborating with local artisans to create custom pieces and finishes.
The lush grounds are a peaceful haven of tranquility, calm and the quiet rhythms of nature, with an abundance of vegetable gardens and fruit orchards with room to roam.
THE "GREEN ISLAND" OF THE AZORES
The largest of the Azores islands, Sao Miguel is known as the Green Island for its vast plains of fertile land and mountains. The most populous in the island chain, the largest city in the archipelago Ponta Delgada is less than 10 minutes drive as are the closest beaches.
A growing cosmopolitan center, the oceanfront city is both contemporary and historic with a mix of modern, 16th- and turn of the century architecture and great dining and nightlife.
Scenic and diverse, the island features the mountainous peaks of Pico da Vara and Agua de Pau and several beautiful lakes including the Lagoa do Fogo and Sete Cidades. The true landmark of the island is The Furnas Valley, with its volcanic thermal baths and steam vents spouting from around a beautiful lagoon.
Several notable religious festivals are held on the island, where tourists flock every year especially the feast of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres on the fifth Sunday after Easter.
