Who knew a thatched roof could be so modern? Rarely employed in a contemporary context, this holiday home in Germany makes unique use of an ancient building technique, elevating the humble material in an unusual and expressive way. We love the contrast of sleek architectural modernism and the inviting holiday vibe.
Located in a residential cul-de-sac along the stunning Baltic peninsula, this holiday home in Germany sits in a quiet meadow with unobstructed views of the Darsswald forest.
Berlin-based architects Möhring designed and constructed the home in 2017 with a unique mix of bracing modernism and unexpectedly earthy materials. Comprised of two basic geometric forms, the main A-frame structure of the house is clad entirely in thatch and intersected by an oblong Corten steel base.
On the ground floor, the bright open living spaces are sleek, white and modern with soaring ceilings and a pared down aesthetic. There's a comfortable sitting area with a fireplace facing the views and a large dining area that divides it from the state-of-the-art kitchen. There's also a large sauna adjacent to the kitchen that opens out to the terrace. Upstairs are three double bedrooms that sleep six.
The two terraces on opposite sides of the house face south-east and south-west, and the gardens feature a fire pit and lounge areas for summer fun.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Wifi throughout, home control with iPad, satellite cable TV with Blu-ray and DVD player and DVD library, Sonos sound system and stereo audio system with CD player and music library, climate control. EV charging station for electric vehicles with parking for two cars. Bicycles for guest use.
AROUND
A couple of hours east of Hamburg, the Mecklenberg Pomeranian region of Germany shares the Baltic Sea coast with Denmark and is one of the most picturesque swaths of rivers, lakes and UNESCO World Heritage towns of the north.
Directly adjacent to the Darsswald forest and the Vorpommersche Bodenlandschaft national park, the peninsula area is home to beautiful coastal forests and meadowlands, fine sandy beaches and the Bodden waters.
The nearby towns of Prerow, Zingst and the Bodden villages of Wieck and Born give a unique glimpse into the culinary and cultural offerings, while some of the best examples of the region's stately medieval homes and palaces can be found in the UNESCO towns of Wismar, Rostock, Stralsund and Greifswald.
