A Century-Old Barn Reimagined for Contemporary Countryside Living
Set among the wide, whispering fields of Haasdonk, Schuur 80 is a 100-year-old barn, meticulously restored into a contemporary rural sanctuary. Thoughtfully redesigned by Belgian architectural studio Markey Schelstraete, the home is an exercise in balance—where heritage and restraint meet bold, modern interventions.
Inside, the space is expansive and architectural, yet deeply grounded. Original timber beams and brick walls bear the weight of time, while sleek surfaces, warm oak, and elemental textures infuse the interiors with quiet luxury. Natural light floods the communal areas, framing vistas of the surrounding countryside and creating an atmosphere that invites connection.
A spacious open-plan living room centered around a modern hearth is designed for gathering, reading, or simply watching the firelight flicker across the walls. Four bedrooms and three bathrooms sleep up to 12 guests, making it ideal for families or close-knit groups. The kitchen is furnished with modern appliances and ample tools for home cooking. Long dining tables, both indoors and out, make shared meals a central ritual. There is also a hot tub tucked beneath the stars and a billiards table for leisurely afternoons.
Around
Positioned in the rolling farmland of East Flanders, Schuur 80 is just 30 minutes from the cultural pull of Ghent and Antwerp, yet surrounded by nature. Here, slow mornings give way to long walks, and evenings settle into candlelit dinners and conversations by the fire.
