Tranquil Hilltop Escape in Upstate New York
Crowning 63 rolling acres in the mountains and meadows of High Falls, New York, just two hours from the city, this elegant property is fit for a crowd, with five bedrooms upstairs and a ground floor lined with floor-to-ceiling windows, two living spaces, a farm table with space for 12, and a cozy, wood-burning fireplace inside and fire pit out. It’s attached to the celebrated Callisto Farmhouse and is a design mag darling.
A Sweeping Hilltop View House
Topping acres of meadows and farmland, this celebrated, Upstate retreat has filled the pages of GQ, Interior Design, Architectural Digest and others. It offers a bright, contemporary oasis in a green countryside location that’s less than 100 miles north of New York City. Views of the flowering meadows and Shawangunk Mountain silhouettes encourage guests to slow down and soak up a slower pace of life. Despite its farm-style setting, the house feels unabashedly modern, furnished in an interior palette of creams, bones and whites, with light wood floors and crisp, textural natural linens.
Outdoor spaces include a grilling area and fire pit, plus on-site hiking trails, an organic vegetable garden and orchard, a mini farm inhabited by rescue chickens and pygmy goats and plenty of space for your favorite pet to roam, too (by reservation).
Experiences
Experiences include internationally-inspired, farm-to-table dining, ranging from open-fire Argentine asados to Lebanese mezze by Edy’s Grocer chef Edy Massih, to a spirited Greek lamb roast using Hudson Valley-sourced ingredients. A private in-home chef service is available by reservation, and guests can explore the producing garden, orchard and green house, and sample wildflower honey from resident bees.
Around
The house is located in the green countryside of Upstate New York’s Ulster County, a region that combines the best of slower-paced country life with a buzzy, farm-to-table sustainable food and beverage scene at local spots in High Falls and nearby Kingston. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant in the area, home to the Mohonk Mountain Preserve, home of the famed rock climbing mecca known as “the Gunks,” the Split Rock swimming hole and nearby Minnewaska State Park.
An increasingly popular Upstate gem, High Falls has become a destination for antique and boutique shoppers, those seeking great casual dining and craft drinking, and creative arts and craft galleries. The town’s weekly Flea Market happens each Sunday, and the town’s namesake “falls” spill down a rocky outcropping on Rondout Creek. Several canals dotted with locks have been around since High Falls’ earlier industrial heyday, and the town is also home to the D&H Canal Trail and a local history museum. Kayaking is popular in the region, and hikers, climbers and mountain bikers will find their pleasure at the Mohonk Preserve, the largest private nature preserve in New York.
