A Bauhaus-Inspired and Biophilic Glass Cabin in the Woods Two Hours from NYC and Philly

Following the Bauhaus architectural dictum of “less is more,” this Pocono Mountain retreat by architect Anthony Weber offers a transparent window on the woods via its 10-foot-tall glass walls. Connecting habitations to nature is the aim of biophilic design, and this uncluttered, modernist camp does double duty, offering a Bauhaus-inspired and biophilic-designed getaway on a private, forested lakefront just hours outside the metropolitan centers of NYC and Philadelphia.

A Modernist Retreat on a Private Lake in the Poconos

If Bauhaus and biophilic aren’t enough design-direction, this modernist glass cabin in the woods by Weber & Company Architecture also follows Passivehaus building standards for energy efficiency and a limited ecological footprint, and even offers a nod to Mondrian with its bright, color-bloc accents. The three-bedroom, two-bath, 1500sqft retreat anchors guests to the Pocono forest floor, offering views of a private lake from its unobstructed perimeter wrapped in windows.

Designed as an expression of the Farnsworth House, a revered modernist architectural icon, the rectilinear ebony space features floor-to-ceiling glass walls, full-height doors and a curated selection of walnut wood, porcelain tile floors and natural touches such as the pebbled walk-in rain shower floors, a Japanese styled soaking tub, and a ultra-contemporary, periscope-styled wood-burning fireplace. The sleek space is further defined by its black trim finishes and vivid color blocs against its ebony clad walls.

Early modernist and mid-century furnishings in the style of Mies van der Rohe and Richard Neutra complete the interior décor, while outdoor spaces are generous and overlook the lake and surrounding wetlands. Three decks cantilever into the treetops and are set with Adirondack chairs. There’s a lakeside fire pit and grill, a fishing and swimming dock, a pair of kayaks for exploring, plus an outdoor cooking and dining zone and a two person cedar, Japanese soaking tub.

Additional features

Access to a community swimming pool is available May through September. Concierge shopping to stock the kitchen prior to arrival can be arranged.

Around

Located approximately two hours from both NYC and Philadelphia, this idyllic modern getaway in the woods offers double the fun—set deep in the forest and right on a lakefront in Northeast Pennsylvania’s tranquil Pocono Mountains. The property offers uninterrupted views across the water and its marsh, and wildlife sightings include beavers, otters, whitetail deer, wild turkeys and the occasional bear. Birdwatchers can view the seasonal migration of eagles, hawks and egrets, and see a variety of waterfowl that inhabit the lake and wetland area. There’s fishing equipment at the property for licensed anglers and two kayaks for getting out on the water (or bikes for exploring the lake’s shores and surrounding forest).

The Pocono Mountain region is an outdoor lover's paradise, with year-round attractions ranging from golf (four 18-hole courses within 30 minutes’ drive) and ski resorts, to white-water rafting opportunities, hiking along waterfall trails, horseback riding, skeet shooting, and even NASCAR and off-road motorsports. The area’s communities offer antique shopping and local crafts markets and shops/galleries, farmer’s markets and local breweries, and wineries. Casinos and spa resorts are also available in the area, some 30 minutes from the property.
