We love this far west region of the Algarve with its world-class surfing spots and wild windswept coastline, and this cool modern beach house right on the dunes is the perfect family-friendly holiday house to enjoy the seaside.

Located along the Atlantic shore of Portugal's far west Algarve region, this modern family home is situated within the windswept dunes with sweeping coastal and mountain views. 

Completed in 2012 and designed by architect Frederico Valsassina in a straightforward linear composition, the contemporary design is perfectly in tune with the landsacpe. A departure in tone from the traditional homes of the Algarve, it's a modern take on the classic beach house, with an indoor-outdoor design that invites the beauty of nature in. 

The open-plan layout flows in seamless transitions with a central living and dining areas that fully opens out to the terrace adjacent to the state of the art kitchen. Whitewashed inside and out, the home is infused with natural light from slide away glass and windows that frame the views with simple contemporary furnishings and decor. 

With five bedrooms and a large media/playroom, the house is ideal for families or groups and can comfortably sleep up to 14 guests. The ouside terrace faces the shore with magnificent sunsets over the dunes and a poolside lounge perfect for soaking it all in.

AROUND

Just a short walk to Carrapateira village, this far southwest region of the Algarve is quiet and tranquil with some of Portugal's best beaches including Bordeira and Amado Beach within five minutes and the southern beaches of Beliche and Zavial within a 20-minute drive. 

The 16th-century walled town of Lagos is under an hour east with stunning cliffs, sweeping headlands and Atlantic beaches and a combo of modern sprawl and picturesque history. The resort town of Portimao is less than an hour east on the bank of the Arade river and the Moorish town of Silves is less than an hour to the east. Algarve's capital of Faro is just over an hour's drive.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: March to October but summer is the best season for the beaches. The best surfing is Fall and winter.
