A Villa Built into the Walls of a Medieval Castle in the Comporta Region
The owners of Casa da Matriz—an architect and his son, now a writer—found this site in 2005. It was a farmer's vegetable garden in an olive grove, tucked into the walls of Alcácer do Sal's Arab castle. But what sat beneath it was something else entirely: Roman thermal baths, a Roman basilica, a mosque, and since 1217, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria do Castelo—the Igreja Matriz. The house they built here is filled with auction finds, commissioned sculpture, mid-century lighting, and an English and French library worth raiding. The infinity pool floats above the Sado river, and a cook is on hand. Comporta beach is 25 minutes away.
Three suites each have a different sensibility. The Architect's Suite has a dedicated architecture library. The Writer's Suite has a floor-to-ceiling book collection and a window set into whitewashed walls embedded with Roman fragments. The Artist's Suite opens toward a courtyard planted with lime and mandarin trees. Throughout the house are auction finds, bespoke furniture made for the space, organic ceramics, iconic mid-century lighting, and commissioned artworks.
Outside, an infinity pool is positioned to look out over the Sado river and its flat, far-reaching rice fields. Below it, the winding alleys of Alcácer do Sal's old town cascade down to the riverside promenade. The olive grove of century-old trees surrounds the house, and the Templar church of Santa Maria do Castelo stands adjacent.
What we love
An architect and his son discovered this vegetable garden perched above the rooftops of Alcácer do Sal in 2005 and spent years turning it into something quietly extraordinary. Casa da Matriz sits on the ruins of Roman thermal baths, beside a 13th-century Templar church, on top of an Arab castle. The infinity pool hangs over the Sado river and its rice fields. Comporta beach is 25 minutes if you feel like going, and Carrasqueira (the stilt fishing village over the mudflats) is worth the drive in the same direction.

Around
Alcácer do Sal's riverside promenade, with its small cafés, local shops, and restaurants along the Sado, is a few minutes on foot. The broader Comporta–Alcácer–Melides triangle is some of Portugal's least-developed Atlantic coast, with pine forests, rice paddies, and wide sand beaches backed by protected dunes. Comporta beach is 25km away. The stilt fishing village of Carrasqueira, one of the most extraordinary sights in the Alentejo, is in the same direction. Restaurants in the region span JNcQUOI and Sublime Comporta at the higher end to informal locals like Social and Porto Santana.
