Where the Sandy Pine Forests Lead to Sea

Outside of the village of Brejos de Carreguera, this vacation home rental in Portugal sits on a sandy plot among the pines and rice fields just a short stroll to the sea. Named for the two magnificent centenary olive trees that have been beautifully highlighted among the landscape, the property is composed of three separate villas in the region's familiar bleached whites in a modern homage to the traditional houses of the Alentejo.

Departing from the quaint charms of history, however, the interiors are sleek and refined, with cool concrete, modern silhouettes and finishes, and a colorful collection of contemporary decor and furnishings mixed in with rustic pieces that update the style without detracting from the beauty of the natural environment.

The main house includes the modern kitchen with a dining area that opens on the living room with banks of windows that frame the garden views. Down the corridor, is the master en suite bedroom. The adjacent en suite bedroom sleeps three.

The second house includes its own living room, and an additional twin room perfect for friends or kids, and a bathroom with a beautiful mirrored wall. In the third house, is the private king suite.

Outside, the lovingly tended gardens are sandy and green, and surrounded by pines, with a unique round pool and lounge areas at its center and the stunning five-hundred-year-old olive trees that provide welcome shade from the sun. The sandy lane leads right down to the shore with the sounds and scents of the windswept Atlantic coast at your doorstep.

The house is located in Brejos da Carregueira de Cima, in rural Herdade da Comporta, surrounded in lavender and rosemary-scented pine woods and rice fields. It’s close to the villages of Carvalhal and Comporta. Pego and Carvalhal beach are five minutes away by car, and Comporta beach is ten minutes away. The lovely former fishing village on the Troia Peninsula is fast becoming a popular spot for the stylish crowd but thankfully retains its laid-back vibe and windswept natural beauty.

The region of Comporta is located about one hour south of Lisbon, in the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, where the Sado River meets the ocean. It’s a popular destination for locals that has recently started attracting an international clientele because of its unspoiled charm and golden sandy beaches.

There are loads of great restaurants and bars nearby. Outdoor activities range from walking through the rice fields to horse riding, biking from the beach to beach, and dolphin watching on the Sado estuary. For families with children, there are some additional options – Badoca Park (40 mins by car), a safari park, and the Science Museum at Lousal Mines (50 mins). Bikes can be rented locally and there is a children’s playground close by.
